Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Automation & Controls Engineer to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of our manufacturing operations in the graphic label materials industry. Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing, this role focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining automated control systems to optimize production processes, reduce downtime, and drive continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Automation & System Integration

  • Design, program, and optimize PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems to enhance manufacturing efficiency.
  • Develop and integrate control systems for new and existing equipment, ensuring seamless automation.

Process Optimization & Performance Improvement

  • Analyze production workflows to identify automation opportunities, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and throughput.
  • Work cross-functionally to minimize downtime and improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Provide technical support for diagnosing and resolving control system issues and process irregularities.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure reliability of automated systems.

Project Management & Technology Integration

  • Lead automation projects from concept to implementation, managing budgets, timelines, and resources.
  • Collaborate with vendors to evaluate and integrate emerging technologies for continuous innovation.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all automation systems comply with OSHA, ISO, and industry regulations.
  • Prioritize operator safety by designing user-friendly and compliant control systems.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered for highly qualified candidates.
  • 3-7 years of experience in automation & controls engineering within a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, AC/DC variable speed drives, and inverters (Siemens, Allen-Bradley), as well as HMIs and SCADA systems.
  • Technical Skills
  • Expertise in ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagram programming.
  • Knowledge of robotics, servo systems, vision systems (preferred).
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve equipment issues to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The ability to recognize and evaluate technical issues and limitations is required. The ability to define and manage expectations is critical. The ability to make sound decisions and actions is required.
