Description :

BereaCorps positions are grant-funded, one-year contract positions from June 1, 2025 - May 31, 2026, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The positions are only available to 2024 and May 2025 Berea graduates that have completed all of their coursework by May 2025.

A successful BereaCorps Horticulture Farm Production Associate is capable of working unsupervised, leading team tasks, supervising student workers, conducting day-to-day operations, and meeting deadlines with assistance from the Horticulture Manager. They will execute organic crop production activities including; seeding, transplanting, irrigation, cultivation, pest management, harvest, post-harvest, communication with customers, and delivery of crops. In addition, they will assist with tasks related to greenhouse production, public events, and maintenance and repairs to machinery and facilities as needed for production. The Associate will have the opportunity to develop and apply their verbal and written communication skills, as well as their organizational and quantitative analysis skills. The Associate will need to be effective at completing timely work and contribute toward collaborative problem-solving. A working knowledge of organic vegetable and fruit crop production, food safety, cultivation, pest control, soil fertility, irrigation systems, and safe operating skills of farm equipment and machinery is desired.

  • In support of Berea College's great commitments this position requires student supervision. What You'll Bring :

Education required to ensure success in this position :

  • Undergraduate degree from Berea College with a graduation date in 2024 or May 2025. Agriculture & Natural Resources, Technology & Applied Design, Biology, and Sustainability & Environmental Studies are preferred.
  • Experience required to ensure success in this position :

  • Experience working outdoors in all kinds of weather
  • Farm experience, especially growing vegetables and fruit for market
  • Experience using farm equipment
  • Experience in effectively delegating of tasks
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Special skills, knowledge and abilities :

  • Experience installing and using irrigation systems
  • Experience growing crops in high tunnels and fields
  • Experience using power tools and farm equipment
  • Experience seeking agricultural information
  • Ability to assimilate new skills and knowledge in a fast-paced job environment. Ability to instruct student workers
  • Experience organizing information and documenting activities using spreadsheets (record keeping)
  • Capabilities necessary to regularly work with things such as tiny seeds and identify insects
  • Knowledge of soil fertility management
  • Knowledge of organic production practices
  • License, certification, or registration necessary :

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Physical requirements :

  • Ability to frequently reach, bend, squat, kneel, or stoop
  • Ability to navigate uneven ground, climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to independently and occasionally lift 50 lbs, more with help
  • Tolerance to exposure to common allergens such as dust, pollen, mold, irritating plants (especially poison ivy) and fumes
  • Tolerance to exposure to wild animals, insects and spiders
  • Tolerance to high temperatures and humidity typical of Kentucky summers and greenhouse environments
  • Tolerance to cold temperatures, rain, wind, snow
  • Environmental conditions :

  • Outdoors nearly 100% of the time, regardless of most weather conditions
  • High tunnels and greenhouses may reach temperatures exceeding 100F, and tend to be humid
  • Weekend and after hours work as necessary (1-2 weekends per month will be required)
  • Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment :

  • Ability to drive tractors and other mechanical farm equipment
  • Ability to use power tools such as drills, saws, impact drivers
  • Ability to use hand tools such as hammers, screw drivers, and garden tools such as shovels, hoes, and pruners
  • Computer literacy and strong aptitude for the following tasks : use of internet and e-mail; data entry; word processing; BereaBox; experience with Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to use copier, cell phone, institution's phone / voice mail system, and GPS navigation system
