The Berea Kids Eat Meal Specialist will be responsible for planning and designing the menu and meal patterns for the Summer Food Service Program. This position will collaborate closely with Grow Appalachia’s Nutrition Programs Coordinator, its Operations & Compliance Specialist, its Executive Director, and food vendors to develop a robust and enhanced summer menu. The Specialist will work to prioritize local food when possible, while ensuring that all meals and menu patterns meet the requirements laid out by the USDA. This position will help ensure meals distributed through the Berea Kids Eat program not only meet all requirement, but are healthy, nutritious, and kid-friendly. Berea Kids Eat, one of Grow Appalachia’s nutrition programs, functions as a multi resource initiative which aims to reach many needs of youth including nutrition, healthy eating and food related education, and on-site enrichment programming.

Your Key Responsibilities
- Design the menu pattern for USDA Sun Meal service (formerly the Summer Food Service Program)
- Ensure all meals and menus meet the required USDA meal components and serving sizes for the Summer Food Service Program
- Collaborate with Berea College's Dining/Sodexo and other food vendors to provide robust and nutritious meals for youth under 18
- Work to source local fruits and vegetables when possible, to enhance summer meals
- Design menus and meals that are kid-friendly and kid-celebrated
- Support the Nutrition Programs Coordinator and Operations and Compliance Specialist in ensuring compliant documentation as required by the USDA Summer Food Service Program
- When necessary, help distribute meals and contribute to meal service
Education required to ensure success in this position:
- Undergraduate degree or 3-5 years relevant experience
- Undergraduate degree or 3-5 years relevant experience
- Comprehensive understanding of USDA Child Nutrition Programs including the SUN Meals program (formerly the USDA Summer Food Service Program) or the CACFP Program
- Sourcing food items
- Local foods procurement
- Menu planning and food vendor relationships
- Background in agriculture, meal service, or food production
- Microsoft office and Excel, PowerPoint and other presentation software
- Meal component and menu pattern background (including understanding of size and types of required USDA meal components)
- Ability to develop work plans and timelines utilizing SMART goals and other similar formats
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with cloud-based storage programs such as Box
- Valid driver’s license
- Required background checks
- Trained in SFSP programs
- Ability to lift containers of food from vehicle to serving area
- Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds
- Mobile neighborhood summer meal routes
- Office work - Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors, students, staff and faculty
- Community sites and public spaces
- Government offices and buildings
- Outdoors in variety of nonhazardous weather such as heat, humidity, rain
- Standard office equipment: computer, fax, phone, etc.
- Vehicle – college vans/cars
