The Berkeley Charter Education Association, Inc. (BCEA) is a nonprofit charter school governing board committed to providing high-quality, student-centered public education in communities across South Carolina. BCEA oversees three tuition-free public charter schools emphasizing academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement, empowering students to thrive.

The Executive Director of Schools serves as the chief academic and operational leader for all campuses governed by BCEA. This dynamic and visionary leader will oversee the network's strategic direction, academic performance, and administrative management. Reporting directly to the BCEA Board of Directors, the Executive Director will ensure the alignment of each school’s mission and goals with the organization’s vision for excellence in rural education.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Management:

  • Collaborate with the Board and principals to establish goals and policies and ensure their implementation.
  • Supervise and evaluate administrators, teachers, and staff, ensuring performance standards.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies affecting education.

Academic Excellence:

  • Working with principals oversees the development and implementation of curriculum and instructional strategies that meet the needs of all students.
  • Ensure proper use of data and assessments to track student progress and guide instruction.
  • Foster a learning environment that promotes high expectations for all students, including those in rural and underserved communities.

Budgeting and Financial Management:

  • Work with principals to develop and manage the schools’ annual budgets, ensuring alignment with district goals and effective resource allocation.
  • Secure school funding through grants, state and federal programs, and the school’s authorizer.
  • Ensure the financial health of the schools, making recommendations for fiscal improvements where necessary.

Marketing and Recruitment of Students:

  • Develop a marketing and recruitment plan that is unique to each school.
  • Build positive relationships with parents, local communities, and other stakeholders.

Personnel Management:

  • Recruit, hire, and retain high-quality staff, including teachers and administrators, to support the schools’ mission and goals.
  • Implement professional development programs for staff to ensure continuous improvement in teaching and leadership.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, respect, and continuous growth within and among the schools.

Planning:

  • Lead the schools in long-term planning, including facility management, technological advancements, and growth initiatives.
  • Address the unique needs of each school, including limited resources, transportation challenges, and community engagement.
  • Identify and pursue innovative solutions to enhance educational opportunities for students in our schools.

Student Support and Safety:

  • Oversee student services, including counseling, special education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Develop and enforce policies that promote student safety, well-being, and a positive school climate.

Crisis Management:

  • Lead the schools in times of crisis, including natural disasters, emergencies, or other challenges unique to rural schools.
  • Develop and implement emergency preparedness plans and procedures for each school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field. A Doctorate is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in educational administration, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within a school district (preferably rural or small district experience).

Certifications: Valid state certification as a School Superintendent or eligibility to obtain certification.

  • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, personnel, systems, and complex operations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
  • Strong understanding of education challenges, including resource management, access to technology, and community engagement.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Full-time position with extended hours as needed.
  • Occasional travel among the schools and to state or national education-related events.
  • Various school environments with a strong emphasis on community involvement.
  • Report directly to the Board (Berkeley Charter Education Association).

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS:

  • Start Date: July 1st, 2025
  • Working Agreement: 240-Day Agreement
