GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for conducting various criminal investigations and providing investigative assistance for criminal matters cases originating in Berkeley County, West Virginia, while also assisting with grand jury presentation/coordination along with trial assistance. Supervision is provided by the Prosecuting Attorney and/or their designee.
ESSENTIAL TASKS

1. Conducts pre-trial criminal investigation of felony, misdemeanor and traffic cases presented before the Circuit Court and Grand Jury.
2. Acts as liaison with law enforcement officers.
3. Provides in-trial assistance to the prosecuting attorney responsible for a specific case.
4. Locates and secures facts, evidence, exhibits and witnesses for trial preparation.
5. Coordinates pre-trial discussions between the prosecution attorneys, witnesses and victims.
6. Maintains files regarding the availability of State witnesses and victims for trial, pre-trial conferences, hearings and motions.
7. Locates and secures any witnesses, unknown witnesses and possible victims.
8. Locates witnesses not found by subpoena service.
9. Conducts interviews with witnesses, victims and alibi witnesses.
10. Secures statements from witnesses, victims and defendants.
11. Makes appointments and collects pertinent information for depositions.
12. Maintains and secures all physical evidence and the accumulation of evidence for presentation at trial.
13. When requested, acts as observer in trials, hearings, depositions and motions and confers with the prosecuting attorney in offering suggestions.
14. Investigates defense strategies, alibi and character testimony.
15. Arranges the taping of video and audio statements.
16. On behalf of the prosecuting attorney, may coordinate any multi-department or agency investigations necessary to insure proper preparation of cases.
17. Photographs evidence for use in trial if requested.
18. Acts as the liaison with local, municipal, state, federal, military, private investigative and record maintenance agencies.
19. Attends related training on existing and new police procedures and policies.
20. Assists the prosecuting attorney in the coordination and development of information for extradition proceedings and performs related work as required.
21. Performs all other pertinent and related duties as assigned.
22. Assists with Grand Jury presentation/preparation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, law enforcement agencies and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to:
1. Associates degree from an accredited college with emphasis on criminal justice, criminology, or related field.
2. Graduation from an accredited state or federal law enforcement academy.
3. Extensive experience (10 years or more) as a law enforcement official preferably with five (5) experience as a criminal investigator.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, pushing, and pulling.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Driver's License.
