REPORTS TO : Sheriff of Berkeley County or Designee
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
The position traditionally referred to as “Chief Tax Deputy” is by function an Office Director position. The function of the Sheriff’s Tax Office is to oversee intake all taxes collected, work in conjunction with the State of West Virginia for delinquent tax matters; oversee conservatorships and estates along with the concealed carry permit program on behalf of the Berkeley County Sheriff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
o Redemptions
o Exonerations
o Daily cash deposits (Daily and Monthly)
o Reconciling bank accounts
o Distribution of taxes (example: Pay in lieu of taxes)
o Depositing and printing jury checks
o Banking Functions (Example Stopped payments, open and close accounts)
o Deputy Retirement
o Prepare bank deposits
o Approve leave and time sheets
o Prepare new tax year
o Delinquent reporting (Letters and list in the newspaper)
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
**Comparable training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications**
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, pushing, and pulling.

- Overall Supervision of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Tax Office, all programs and employees
- Ensure payouts off all the taxes collected to the various entities are completed
- Ensure all Sheriff’s Tax Office Accounts are balanced and reported correctly
- Work in conjunction with the State of WV Auditors Office, WV State Treasurers Office and Secretary of State’s Office and compliance for all state laws.
- Ensure internal controls are being adhered to and prepare accounts for Audit
- Supply written annual accounting to the commission or clerk within specified times in accordance with state law.
- The Tax Office Director must be able to accomplish all the duties within the tax office however currently the following are specifically completed by the Director daily:
o Redemptions
o Exonerations
o Daily cash deposits (Daily and Monthly)
o Reconciling bank accounts
o Distribution of taxes (example: Pay in lieu of taxes)

- Perform the Duties of the Tax Office Supervisor in their absence

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Any combination of education and/or work experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or higher learning institution with course work in financial studies or related field.
- At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as a Tax Deputy
- Excellent analytical abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products to include WORD, EXCEL, etc.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Submit to a background investigation conducted by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
- Ability to answer inquiries and assist the public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, associates, and the public.
