The Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) Division has an opening for a Radiation Physicist. to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will conduct radiological risk assessments, perform radiation calculations, provide shielding requirements, oversee radiation safety protocols, and collaborate with engineers on shielding design. This position provides an opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, contribute to groundbreaking research, and ensure the safety and success of a world-class scientific user facility. 

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract nearly 1,600 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. This role will be filled at Level 3 or Level 4 based on the selected candidate's skills, knowledge, and experience.

 

Level 3 Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct radiological risk assessments under minimal supervision and design protective measures to minimize radiation exposure to people and to the environment.
  • Perform radiation calculations and specify shielding requirements for particle accelerators and beamlines.
  • Collaborate with engineers to design shielding and personnel protection systems.
  • Organize and provide guidance for radiation surveys
  • Support the ALS shielding configuration control program
  • Be a key contributor to operational radiation safety procedures and work planning activities
  • Participate in research and development activities in radiation physics, contributing to the ALS and LBNL mission through publications.       

Level 4 Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead the design and development of radiation safety systems, including optimized and innovative shielding solutions.
  • Oversee reviews of radiation-related incidents and recommend procedural improvements.
  • Drive radiation-safety policy making at ALS and contribute to cross-lab working groups.
  • Propose and lead innovative research projects in Radiation Physics.
  • Provide radiation safety training to ALS staff and users
  • Actively participate in ALS Division and Lab-wide committees and working groups. 

What is Required:

Level 3

  • Master’s degree in Health/Radiation Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in radiation calculations and shielding design
  • Proficiency with Monte Carlo radiation transport codes (e.g., FLUKA, MCNP, PHITS) to model and analyze shielding effectiveness in ensuring personnel safety.
  • Familiarity with radiation detector theory and operations.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent initiative and ability to plan, anticipate, and identify needs, assess and resolve complex problems, and develop and coordinate plans to accomplish objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within collaborations

Level 4

  • Ph.D. in Health/Radiation Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience, including leadership in shielding design and/or radiation safety programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and collaborate across diverse teams.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience at a particle-accelerator facility or DOE national laboratory.
  • Strong problem-solving and multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Experience designing and implementing radiation shielding systems with a focus on mitigating exposure risks to staff and facility users.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
  • The level 3 position is expected to pay $117,000.00 - $146,244.00/year, which fits within the full salary range of $117,000.00 - $197,436.00 for the Radiation Protection Spec 3. H10.3 -
  • The level 4 position is expected to pay $137,724.00 - $172,164.00/year, which fits within the full salary range of $137,724.00 - $232,392.00 for the Radiation Protection Spec 4, H10.4
  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
