Responsibilities
We have three entry level openings for Underwriting Trainees to join our Berkley One team! Our Trainees learn underwriting practices by participating in formal, on-the-job training which leads to a working knowledge in a variety of areas, including: high net worth personal lines product language; underwriting practices, policies and guidelines; risk selection; customer relationship development and cultivation; and sales competency.

This position will be based in our Morristown, NJ office (4 days in the office, 1 day remote)
Key functions include but are not limited to:
Industry Knowledge
- Develop broad knowledge of the insurance business, marketplace, company goals, objectives and metrics
- Demonstrate broad understanding of company operations, strategies, financials and competitive advantages
Product and Service
- Demonstrate forms and coverage knowledge and apply them to exposures
- Compare company coverage to competitors and identify competitive differences and position them effectively
- Able to articulate company service capabilities and position to meet specific customer needs
Book Management and Pricing
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of rate, growth and profit objectives and takes this into consideration when making underwriting decisions and pre-qualifying risks
- Perform detailed analysis utilizing appropriate information to determine account acceptability and which takes customer needs into consideration
- Apply underwriting knowledge and risk information make sound decisions on pricing, terms and conditions
- Demonstrate and apply understanding of line of business and customer segmentation objectives
- Makes decisions within authority and refers risks outside authority
- Meet or exceed service goals and standards
Sales and Customer Management
- Able to identify customer needs and objectives and position products accordingly
- Negotiate coverage, terms, conditions and pricing
- Develop successful relationships with customers and potential customers
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
- We will consider entry level candidates looking to start a career in the insurance industry
- Strong oral and written communication skills, displaying a positive attitude
- Detail orientation with initiative and ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work with team members at all levels of the organization
