Position Summary
The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) supports dental care delivery by preparing treatment room, patient, instruments, and materials; passing instruments and materials; performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act. The EFDA actively supports BCHC in its efforts to maintain designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). Participates actively in BCHC’s mission to provide exceptional patient-centered primary and preventive healthcare for all residents of Berks County, regardless of patient status
Job Description
- Assist the dentist with dental procedures.
- Is responsible for the care and maintenance of dental instruments and equipment.
- May perform the following services: Placing and removing rubber dams.
Placing and removing matrices.
Placing and removing wedges.
Applying cavity liners and bases.
Placing and condensing amalgam restorations.
Carving and contouring amalgam restorations.
Placing and finishing composite resin restoration and/or sealant material or both.
- Each of the professional services identified above shall be performed under the direct supervision of a dentist.
- PROHIBITIONS. An expanded function dental assistant may not:Examine, diagnose or plan treatment.
Cut hard or soft tissue.
Prescribe drugs, medicaments or lab authorizations.
Approve the final occlusion.
Perform pulp capping, Pulpotomy and other endodontic procedures.
Perform final placement/cementation of fixed and removable prosthetic appliances.
Administer local anesthesia, parenteral or inhalational sedation, nitrous oxide analgesia or general anesthesia.
Take Impressions other than for study models or diagnostic casts.
Other duties as required.
- Shall perform under the direct supervision of a dentist. Direct supervision means that a dentist is in the dental office or treatment facility, personally diagnoses the condition to be treated, personally authorizes the procedure is being performed by the expanded function dental assistant, and before dismissal of the patient, evaluates the work performed by the expanded function dental assistant.

Pay: $18.32 - $22.06 per hour
