SUMMARY
Berkshire Botanical Garden (BBG) is a membership-supported horticultural and educational organization encompassing over 24 acres of formal and natural gardens in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to “provide information, education and inspiration concerning the science, art and joy of gardening and its role in preserving the environment.”
BBG is seeking a part-time, Seasonal Assistant, Buildings and Grounds who will perform essential grounds, facilities, and maintenance duties to ensure a successful visitor season.
The PT Seasonal Assistant, Buildings and Grounds will be asked to work a flexible schedule of 25-30 hours per week. Some evening, weekend and holiday work will be required to help support BBG’s busy calendar of programs and community events.
The hourly wage for this position is $18 per hour. This position is expected to start immediately and end by the end of October. The PT Seasonal Assistant, Buildings and Grounds will report to the Manager of Buildings and Grounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The PT Seasonal Assistant, Buildings and Grounds will be an important member of the Buildings and Grounds department, working closely with other staff to ensure our campus is beautiful, safe, and sustainable during our busy summer season.
The Seasonal Assistant will be responsible for the upkeep of outdoor areas, including mowing, trimming, and edging grass and shrubbery; ensuring driveways and walkways are well-maintained and free of debris; and performing seasonal maintenance tasks such as leaf removal and mulching.
The Seasonal Assistant will also be responsible for assisting with facilities upkeep such as handling trash, recycling, compost, and supply inventory. The Seasonal Assistant will coordinate with BBG events and education staff to move equipment, including tables and chairs, to accommodate a full calendar of events.
The Seasonal Assistant will work with other Buildings and Grounds staff to address urgent issues and perform needed repairs across campus.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 2 years demonstrated experience working in lawn care, groundskeeping, building maintenance and facilities management
- Knowledge and ability to safely operate and maintain power tools, heavy equipment, and commercial vehicles
- Keen awareness of safety protocols, safe working environment conditions, and willingness to raise concerns or potential hazards to supervisor
- Self-starter, able to work independently and as part of a team; punctual and reliable
- Good judgement, problem-solving attitude and desire to find solutions
- Comfortable working in a public setting; must be professional and courteous towards staff and visitors
- Position requires physical work indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions
- Valid driver’s license required
- Background check required
- Must follow all BBG employee rules and regulations. BBG provides a smoke- and drug-free work environment for all employees
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The staff of 18-30 (depending on the season) works in various shared office spaces as well as on the grounds and shares a common interest in the environment and the visitor/student experience.
