The Non-Secure Detention Counselor plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive development of at-risk youth in a short-term residential detention facility. Responsible for supervising the daily activities of youth, the counselor provides a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Account for welfare and well-being of youth at all times.
- Model appropriate behavior standards for youths.
- Maintain visual sight of youth in the program.
- Counsel youth on an individual and group basis to assist with adjustment/transition to the program.
- Ensure youth follow and participate in program schedules.
- Communicate any concerns with youth are brought to the attention of program leadership.
- Assist with daily meal preparation.
- Assist with security and safety of youth and facility.
- Adheres to agency policies and procedures; follows and supports agency mission, vision and values including participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum of High School/GED required.
- 1 year experience working with youth and families; Associates Degree can be substituted for the 1-year experience. (Human Services for related field)
- Experience working with at risk youth in detention/residential facility preferred.
- Successful completion of on-the-job training for Certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and First Aid/CPR certification following on-the-job training.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule with variable hours including day, evening, weekend, holiday and subject to call hours.
- Valid Drivers License, with acceptable driving history to the Agency Travel is required. Ability to coordinate and plan travel for visits and appointments in efficient manner.
- Ability to work with economically and culturally diverse population.
- Skills: Verbal and written communication skills.
