General Job Description:
The Director of Language and Culture will be a critical part of the district’s leadership team and is responsible for executing the district’s strategic plan in support of dual language learners and family engagement. Reporting to the Deputy Superintendent, this position will execute the district’s strategic plan in the area of Language and culture. This position is responsible for building a district-wide culture of multilingualism and support for diverse heritages, as well as to ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local laws regarding the education and adequacy of programs for Hispanic and Native students, bilingual learners, and at-risk students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee Implementation of Strategic Plan: Articulate a strategy for integrating and aligning dual language and heritage language services and community engagement to advance the district’s strategic plan.
- Performance Management and Continuous Improvement: In partnership with their supervisor and alignment with the Strategic Plan, establish goals and metrics for dual language learners. Establish systems and routines to monitor progress against goals and opportunities to adjust in response to formative data and provide guidance to school leaders and relevant personnel for interpreting and acting in response to the data.
- Design and Implement Technical Assistance for Schools in providing dual language services students: Coordinate planning and implementation of the Bilingual/ELD/English as a Second Language (ESL) programs with district principals. Plans, organizes, and coordinates professional development for district personnel to address the needs of EL students. Coordinates student placement with principals in Bilingual/ELD/ESL programs, student monitoring plans, collection of student progress data, and identifying needs of high-risk students. Coordinates with school counselors for student progress assessment, identifying needs of high-risk students, and status of high-risk students. Coordinates all assessment activities, including training personnel, for the assessment of the Bilingual Program and the English proficiency of all EL students.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination: Establish and maintain strong, collaborative, and candid relationships with community stakeholders, particularly families and community members. Model collaborative leadership with colleagues to ensure alignment and integration services. Effectively applies change management theory and strategy with a wide range of diverse stakeholders, internally and externally, to plan, implement, and manage programs and services to ensure that at-risk students are provided with effective programs and services. Provide written/oral reports to parents, students, and Tribal Administrators.
- Team Leadership: Foster a growth oriented, inclusive, and positive environment while keeping employees and management accountable to district policies, procedures and guidelines. Assist principals in the evaluation and assessment of Bilingual/ELD/ESL programs and personnel. Effectively oversee and manage department budgets. Complete other tasks as deemed appropriate by the CEO and direct supervisor. Ensure that all functions of the department and school sites are compliant with federal, state, and local requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role may oversee Family Engagement Coordinators and Student Success Coordinators.
Required Qualifications:
- A master’s degree or higher.
- A valid New Mexico PED administrative license or eligibility to obtain one.
- Ability to pass employment verification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five years of experience working with Pueblo or Native American populations.
- Three years of experience in district-level or tribal administration working with Bilingual/ELD/ESL programs.
- Bilingual Keres or Spanish preferred.
- Previous experience as principal or assistant principal.
- Classroom teaching experience serving Native American and/or Hispanic students in an integrated setting.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.
Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air-quality. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. Travel to facilities throughout the district is integral to the job.

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology, standard office equipment, and basic Office
