What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mower position at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest?
Bernheim Forest and Arboretum, a 16,000 acre protected forest in Kentucky, about 25 miles south of Louisville, is seeking an experienced lawn care technician to mow lawns and perform other general landscape maintenance.
Bernheim is home to a 600-acre arboretum, designated as Kentucky’s official arboretum. The natural landscape features 40 miles of hiking trails and extensive natural areas managed for conservation and research purposes. Its woodlands, prairies, and wetlands make up the largest privately-owned forest in the Eastern United States dedicated to education and conservation. Bernheim is a privately owned not-for-profit, relying on donations and memberships, whose mission is to connect people with nature. Annually, over 350,000 people experience Bernheim through visits, educational programs, field trips, and Bernheim festivals.
The Mower is responsible for mowing and maintaining assigned areas within Bernheim’s arboretum. The Mower will also be responsible for operating and maintaining assigned equipment while on site.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Responsible for: Mowing grass, string trimming areas unable to be mowed, and picking up and disposing of debris/branches/twigs in assigned areas.
- Provide proper maintenance in assigned area of the arboretum using self-propelled front deck mowers, zero turn radius mowers, tractors, and other various lawn care equipment.
- Keep supervisor apprised of job-related problems, damaged equipment, building damage, potential safety violations, and to keep the supervisor informed of current work assignment progress.
- Maintain the safe and efficient operation of equipment, tools, and potential chemical handling.
- Be punctual and reliable regarding assigned start/end times.
- Always represent Bernheim Forest and Arboretum in a positive manner, especially when in contact with visitors in the arboretum grounds.
- Assist individuals and groups as needed within the policies and procedures of Bernheim Forest and Arboretum
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1–2 years of lawn care or groundskeeping experience.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Familiarity with a variety of lawn care techniques.
- Proper understanding of the utilization of various lawn care equipment, including self-propelled front deck mowers, zero turn radius mowers, tractors, and weed trimmers.
- Be capable of lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds alone or heavier amounts with the assistance of other employees.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
- Maintain strong communication and customer service skills.
- Be reliable, responsible and conscientious, with a strong work ethic.
- Can work independently and as part of a team environment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

This seasonal position reports to the Horticulture Manager.
Hours Per Week: 24 hours/week (may very slightly during peak periods)
Pay Rate: $15/hr.
Position Duration: April 7, 2025, through November 14, 2025 (weekdays only)
