What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ranger position at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest?
Bernheim Forest and Arboretum, a 16,000 acre protected forest in Kentucky, about 25 miles south of Louisville, is seeking a motivated individual to be responsible for the safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors, conducting opening and closing procedures, and serving as an ambassador to all Bernheim guests.
Bernheim is home to a 600-acre arboretum, designated as Kentucky’s official arboretum. The natural landscape features 40 miles of hiking trails and extensive natural areas managed for conservation and research purposes. Its woodlands, prairies, and wetlands make up the largest privately-owned forest in the Eastern United States dedicated to education and conservation. Bernheim is a privately owned not-for-profit, relying on donations and memberships, whose mission is to connect people with nature. Annually, over 350,000 people experience Bernheim through visits, educational programs, field trips, and Bernheim festivals.
Working as part of the Operations team, under the guidance of the Lead Ranger, the Ranger will greet visitors in a friendly professional, positive manner and act as an ambassador of Bernheim leading the visitors to a better experience while enhancing Bernheim’s mission of Connecting People with Nature. The Ranger will also be responsible for enforcing regulations and policies on Bernheim property.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Monitors all Bernheim property and facilities to ensure the safety and security of all people and property associated with Bernheim, including incoming and outgoing vehicles and individuals.
- Delivers superior customer service to Bernheim employees, visitors, and volunteers.
- Provides information pertaining to park use, safety requirements, and points of interest.
- Directs traffic, investigates accidents, and patrols areas to prevent fires, vandalism, and theft.
- Secures premises and personnel by being highly visible, patrolling the property, monitoring surveillance equipment, inspecting buildings and access points, permitting entry.
- Cautions and/or evicts violators of laws, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Directs and/or participates in first aid and rescue activities.
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements including checking fire extinguishers, AEDs, monitoring for alarms, and other applicable equipment.
- Maintains necessary certifications to train Bernheim employees in safety procedures – training to be determined and paid for by Bernheim.
- Enforces standards of cleanliness and sanitation as they apply to Bernheim property.
- Compiles specified park use statistics, keeps records, and prepares reports of area activities.
- Maintains a positive, helpful, and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
- Executes all regular duties at Bernheim major special events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Expectations
- High school diploma/GED and/or combination of education and equivalent experience is required. Additional law enforcement or similar experience would be preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record at time of hire.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills, written and verbal.
- Basic computer skills (email, access to facilities schedules, etc.)
- Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures and first aid.
- Ability to perform CPR when needed.
- A team player with a can-do attitude who is willing to help at all levels of tasks.
- Enjoy working in an outdoor environment with comfort and ability to engage in outdoor environments, in all weather conditions.
- Role may require the ability to continuously walk, stand, bend, twist and/or stoop and lift up to 50lbs.
- Flexibility to work a variety of hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events, as needed.
- Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans, when necessary, throughout the day.

This full-time, hourly position reports to the Operations Manager, with dotted-line reporting to the Lead Ranger.
Pay Rate: $17/hr.
