What are the responsibilities and job description for the Court Investigator position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
Performs interviews with clients and gathers information regarding employment, financial ability, and earning capacity of parties involved in domestic relations cases.
Makes recommendations regarding appropriate child support obligations based on a thorough knowledge of the MI Child Support Formula (MFSC).
Cooperates with and assists law enforcement agencies in locating delinquent payers; petitions delinquent payers to Court.
Prepares dockets and Court Orders; presents case summaries and recommendations to the Court.
May testify in court and serve legal paperwork.
Prepares and maintains records, files of case histories and activities using the MI Child Support Enforcement System (MICSES); prepares necessary correspondence.
Receives and responds to inquiries over the phone and in person regarding payment, enforcement and/or modification of support.
Verifies and updates information obtained through communication with parties, employers, and social service agencies; disseminates information as appropriate.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience related to collection investigations or investigative law enforcement experience. Additional course work in psychology, criminology, accounting or related field is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid vehicle operator's license.
Candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including drug testing prior to employment.
A background check will be performed, and employee will be fingerprinted.
May be subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Applicant may not have any felony convictions.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Able to communicate effectively and tactfully with individuals from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
Capable of de-escalating emotionally charged situations.
Knowledge of mainframe and personal computer applications, data collection, and automated information systems preferred.
