What are the responsibilities and job description for the Court Security Officer - Temporary/Part-Time position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
- Ensures the security and safety of jurors, witnesses, court staff, and the public involved in court proceedings.
- Performs patrol and security checks of hallways, offices and other areas of any court or county facility where court proceedings are occurring.
- Maintains order in the courtroom building by enforcing county and court policies relating to security and efficient courtroom operations.
- Assists law enforcement officers and court officials in emergencies.
- Participates in the transportation of prisoners or juveniles who are being held in custody.
- Maintains continuous radio monitoring and responds to calls as needed.
- Makes custodial arrests as required by court orders and as required to keep public peace.
- Prepares courtrooms and oversees juries before, during, and after deliberation.
- Operates electronic equipment and monitors metal detection equipment.
- Maintains videotape logs, marks exhibits, and administers oaths.
- Contributes to the development of policies and procedures, security response protocol, emergency evacuation planning, and training for personnel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent and four years of law enforcement/corrections or military/private security experience;
OR
- A combination of education/training and experience.
- Associate degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and Michigan Concealed Pistol License throughout the course of employment.
- The ability to maintain certification and proficiency in a variety of training areas including firearms, defensive tactics and first aid/basic life support is mandatory.
- Will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including drug testing, prior to employment.
- A background check will be performed, and employees will be fingerprinted.
- Subject to random alcohol and drug testing.
- May be required to work flexible hours.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Strong working knowledge and experience with computers, information systems, software applications, and proficient keyboarding skills.
- Ability to multitask and efficiently support courtroom operations.
- Capable of standing for extended periods to assist with court workflow.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to handle difficult individuals and deescalate potentially volatile situations.
