What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Investigation Specialist position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
Conducts non-nursing related activities in the Clinical and Community Health Services (CCHS) program area of the Health Department.
Completes communicable and sexually transmitted disease investigations utilizing the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS) including client interviews and obtaining information from healthcare providers and laboratories. This may infrequently include home visits.
Assists with aspects of clinic operation including exam room preparation, specimen packaging, and medication/supply inventory.
Receives and responds to communication from the public and community partners about issues related to public health nursing.
Provides education to stakeholders and clients.
May perform administrative duties to support public health nursing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in public health, healthcare administration, and human and/or social service-related field;
OR
Associate degree public health, healthcare, and human and/or social service-related field and two years of experience working in a public health or healthcare setting.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
Must be able to work from both the Benton Harbor and Niles offices of the Health Department.
In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Experience with disease surveillance systems, public health nursing, and/or epidemiology.
Clear understanding of medical terminology and basic infectious disease processes.
Capable of maintaining confidentiality and strong professional ethics.
Organized, with an understanding of office practices.
Proficient in computer applications including the use of internet-based applications and MS Office Suite.
Excellent customer service skills with an ability to build rapport with individuals quickly, particularly on the phone.
Able to find clarity in somewhat ambiguous situations and provide support to team members.
Excellent time management skills and an ability to switch between and reprioritize tasks quickly, despite interruptions.
Comprehension of structural influences on health including the intersections of race and health, education and health, and income and health.
Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is highly desired.
