The Crown Publishing Group, a dynamic and multifaceted division of Penguin Random House, is seeking an Associate Production Editor who will be responsible for working on a variety of trade and literary fiction, memoir, and narrative nonfiction, with the opportunity to production edit illustrated titles, including cookbooks, children's books, and gift products, from manuscript to bound book. Must love books; be proactive; have excellent grammar, copyediting, and proofreading skills; and be able to produce high-quality books while adhering to tight deadlines. Prior experience with one-color nonfiction and fiction preferred.Specific responsibilities include : Production edit original one-color manuscripts, reissues, and paperback conversions, with the potential opportunity to production edit four-color manuscripts and gift productsCreate and maintain schedules while juggling multiple projectsHire freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers, and evaluate and supervise their workPrepare electronic manuscripts for design and typesettingCollate author and proofreader corrections, using Adobe Acrobat, and check all stages of proofs through printer-ready PDFsCopyedit and proofread indexes, jacket / cover copy, and other materials as necessaryAttend weekly status meeting for Crown one-color titles with Assistant Director of Production EditorialWork closely with managing editors, editors, designers, and production managers to anticipate and solve problemsMaintain high quality and consistent style within each book projectSupport colleagues with backup reads and coverage when neededPlease apply if you meet the following qualifications : Minimum 2 years' prior experience as an assistant production editor at a trade publishing house highly desired; or 4 to 5 years' similar or equivalent experience in managing editorial or editorial departmentsExcellent copyediting and proofreading skills; completion of a copyediting and / or proofreading course a plusStrong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation; familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th and 18th editionsStrong interpersonal and communication skillsDetail- and accuracy-oriented; organized; able to set priorities and maintain a sense of humor and grace under pressureAbility to meet deadlines while upholding high standards and managing multiple projectsStrong computer skills, including intermediate to advanced level of experience with Track Changes and electronic copyediting in MS Word; experience with Adobe Acrobat comments tools and with XML coding or Word Styles a plusFlexible and adaptable to changing workflows and proceduresA learning mindset, with an eagerness to expand skills and knowledge of the bookmaking processThe PRH office is located in New York, New York. This position is hybrid with a requirement to be in our NYC office at 1745 Broadway approximately three days per week.The salary for this position is $61,000.
