The Director of Accounting (Controller) is responsible for the overall management and operation of the accounting department. The Director of Accounting (Controller) is a member of the Finance and Accounting Team and reports to the VP of Finance and Accounting. This position also partners with cross-functional team members across the organization.
Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition.
- Ensures that all AR collections and AP payments are completed on time and provides prompt notification to stakeholders of any exceptions.
- Establish, monitor, and enforce internal controls over company assets, financial transactions, and financial reporting.
- Maintains and enforces a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
- Manages monthly, quarterly, and year-end close to ensure completion in a timely fashion to meet assigned deadlines. Ensure that all general ledger balance sheet accounts and material income statement accounts are reconciled and analyzed monthly.
- Ensures that the best practices for close automation and closing analytics are in place to minimize manual closing work and ensure that financial reporting is as efficient as possible.
- Manages all technical accounting workpapers and supporting schedules.
- Ensures that all scheduled financial reports and workpapers are properly named, stored, distributed, and protected according to current policies and procedures.
- Coordinate activities of external auditors to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
- Collaborate with VP of Finance and Accounting and FP&A team to issue and validate budgets and forecasts. Assist in coordination with department heads and senior management.
- Manage weekly payment processing (check run & electronic disbursements)
- Manage intercompany transactions, reporting for subsidiaries, and consolidated financial reporting.
- Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting by managing and complying with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Responsible for oversight and support of monthly, quarterly, and annual tax returns and month-end close process
- Oversee accounting for all income taxes (ASC 740): including review and reconciliation of the consolidated income tax provision (annual and quarterly) and all related assumptions, analyses, journal entries, calculations, and footnote disclosures
- Manage deferred tax calculations and book-to-tax reconciliation
- Review and manage the federal and multi-state income tax, indirect tax (including sales/use tax and property tax), and 1099 compliance prepared by external tax service providers
- Review tax returns and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Oversee all estimated tax schedules and payments
- Manage all check requests, EFTs, and wire-transfers for payment of taxes
- Managing, facilitating, and resolving all taxing authority notices, inquiries, and audits in a timely manner
- Lead and manage the accounting team, providing mentorship, training, and guidance to ensure the completion of financial tasks.
- Manage department goals and objectives, and support & collaborate with other departments to achieve company goals and objectives.
- Research technical accounting issues for compliance.
- Continually evaluate, adapt, and implement accounting software, systems, and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy in accounting operations.
- Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Assess financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, including credit risk, market risk, and operational risk.
- Set and track financial KPIs.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, opportunities for cost reduction, and areas for growth
- Communicate complex financial information and accounting policies effectively to executive teams, management, and other stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
- CPA license preferred with 5 years public accounting experience in A&A services for private, for-profit companies.
- 7-10 years of overall combined accounting and finance experience, preferably in the consumer products retail or similar industry.
- At least 5 years of experience in senior management with preference towards experience in setting department strategy and introducing new accounting roles into a department.
- Hands on experience with billing, A/R, A/P, general ledger, cost accounting, inventory accounting, and revenue recognition.
- Experience in managing monthly, quarterly, and year-end close with a team of 5 or more using closing procedures and checklists to coordinate work and meet deadlines.
- Solid understanding and experience with multi-jurisdictional tax (sales & use tax, income tax, property tax, etc.)
- Profound understanding of US GAAP, accounting principles, standards, and regulations
- Proficiency in financial software and large ERP systems (NetSuite ERP strongly preferred)
- Experience in implementing and managing automated systems to streamline the accounting close process, minimizing manual data entry and improving the efficiency of financial reporting at the end of each accounting period
- Experienced with FloQast or similar accounting workflow automation and close management software
- Preferred experience working with overseas staff and/or external vendors that handle specific department functions or tasks.
- Ability to manage deadlines and accurately process data under time limited restraints.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office with an advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide teams.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex financial data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 suite
