Best Veterinary Solutions, Inc., has an immediate opening for a Safety Manager. In this position you will help develop, coordinate, and implement occupational health, environmental health and Department of Transportation policies and procedures to promote and ensure effective safety operations in the organization. This position can be based in our Corporate Office in Ellsworth, Iowa or our new facility in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with management to develop, prepare, and implement safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules.
  • Ensures completion of required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Directs and oversees the safety committee and provide technical and administrative support.
  • Conduct inspections of assigned facilities and settings to ensure applicable health, safety, chemical hazard and environmental regulations are being met.
  • Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems.
  • Develop and conduct employee training on applicable safety standards.
  • Reviews safety training and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates.
  • Conducts safety inspections and audits to assess employee compliance with safety regulations.
  • Reviews accident and incident reports, issues corrective action if policies and procedures are not being followed.
  • Enforces applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations including OSHA, EPA, FDA, DOT, and DHS.
  • Identifies various potential hazards and risks that may arise in the event of an emergency; develops plans to mitigate or manage those risks and facilitates safety and evacuation meetings and drills as required.
  • Develops, distributes, and maintains emergency communication protocols and documentation, which may include emergency contact trees, emergency response hierarchy, and other records.
  • Drafts emergency preparedness plan(s) for facility, ensuring OSHA and EPA requirements, national and local fire protection codes, and industry requirements are addressed and implemented. When applicable, submits plans to appropriate regulatory agencies in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that relevant policies and procedures are current and in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the Safety Team in the development, recommendation, and implementation of organizational health and safety protocols following guidelines from OSHA, EPA, FDA, DOT, and DHS for our production, warehouse, transportation, and water sanitation lines of business.
  • Identify, research, establish, and/or maintain training requirements including hazard communication, emergency response, and other safety practices.
  • Oversees workplace safety and training platform and material to ensure compliance within the organization for new hire and annual training.
  • Document and maintain records related to all safety and hazardous events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Due to the nature of the business the position must consent to and have the ability to pass a pre-employment and annual drug test, extensive background and fingerprint check through the FBI.
  • Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, and environmental regulations and policies.
  • Ability to anticipate hazards and problems and respond effectively.
  • Ability to develop and conduct in person and online training.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, understandable manner, and listen attentively to others, understand material, and provide instructions to all team members.
  • Ability to adjust priorities and manage time wisely in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and/or visual form.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Demonstrate ability to work well under pressure with a proactive approach to unusual occurrences.
  • Willingness to embrace an ever-changing environment.
  • Strong leadership skills, able to lead by example with personal accountability and a strong sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrate excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software to complete reports and logs.
  • Safety Awareness - Ability to identify and correct conditions that affect customer and employee safety.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health and safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or related field required.
  • At least three years of occupational health and safety experience in a production industrial environment required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, driving or at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Physically capable of manual labor that includes lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and reaching.
  • Physical ability to operate industrial machinery and become forklift certified.
  • Ability to work with and around chemical/industrial hazards.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% or as needed.
