Staff Attorney-Family Preparedness

The current administration’s deportation surge poses an unprecedented threat to the safety of thousands of undocumented individuals, families, and children in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, when immigrants are approached by immigration officers, they can exercise constitutionally protected rights. The deportation of an undocumented parents can result in citizen children being left without anyone to enroll them in school or authorize medical. Bet Tzedek can help in both these instances. Its Immigration Preparedness Workshops provide individuals and families information regarding their constitutionally protected rights when approached by immigration officers, and it explains to parents the steps necessary to ensure their child’s well-being. It also pairs these parents with pro bono volunteers who can help them draft protective documentation for their family. Evening and weekend clinics are held throughout Los Angeles County every week. Bet Tzedek seeks an individual to coordinate and deliver these workshops.

This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ hybrid / remote workplace designation. While the primary workplace is Bet Tzedek’s offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload / business obligations.

Salary : 72,495.22-82,001.88

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

1.     Coordinate the recruitment and training of workshop volunteers and assist with client and volunteer management at Family Preparedness Workshops.

2.     Present family preparedness and know your rights presentations in person and virtually to community members.

3.     Work with community partners to set and arrange all logistics related to Immigrant Preparedness Workshops, including but not limited to date, time, location, and speakers for workshops.

4.     Maintain all databases related to Immigrants Preparedness Workshops.

5.     Work with program staff to develop and update all Immigrant Preparedness Workshop materials.

6.     Open and close all client files related to Immigrant Preparedness Workshops.

7.     Work with program staff on other matters related to Immigrant Preparedness initiatives as needed, including but not limited to assisting with Probate Guardianship and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status intakes and case management.

8.     Support Bet Tzedek’s Kinship and Foster Youth teams by representing clients in their immigration matters, including obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status in state court and before USCIS, in removal proceedings before EOIR and in other forms of appropriate relief.

QUALIFICATIONS :

1.     Bilingual and biliterate in both English and Spanish (required);

2.     Active member of the California State Bar in good standing (required);

3.     Minimum one-to-three years of experience in immigration law (required) :

4.     Minimum one-to-three years of experience with Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases (highly preferred);

5.     Experience in Kinship Care, Probate Guardianship, and / or Family Law (highly preferred);

6.     Experience training and working with volunteer attorneys and students (preferred);

7.     Demonstrated patience, compassion, respect and commitment to serving low-income workers (required); and

8.     Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of job duties (required).
