Bethany College Resident Director and Student Affairs Coordinator

Under General supervision, this person will independently perform the job duties noted below and is responsible for supporting Bethany College’s mission statement in compliance with Bethany College regulations, policies and procedures. This is a required live-in position

Essential Functions: 

Front Desk Manager

  • Oversee front office- greeting people as they come in, directing them to the appropriate person/office, keep the workspace clean
  • Oversee front office student workers - schedule, timesheets, duties
  • Oversee campus parking - including passing out parking hangers and tickets 
  • Point person for the security camera system regarding looking at footage when needed 
  • Willingness to take on other office tasks as they arise 

Housing

  • Coordinate room changes during Room Change Weeks at the beginning of each semester; coordinate other room changes throughout the academic year if necessary
  • Create and manage Thanksgiving Break and Spring Break Residency Applications; maintain residency charge spreadsheet that is shared with the Bursar after each break period
  • Create and manage Short Term (May Term/Summer, Winter Term) Break Residency Applications; oversee summer residential students and maintain residency charge spreadsheet that is shared monthly with the Bursar
  • Manage Hall Fines spreadsheets (organized by semester) and share charges with the Bursar each month
  • Assist Executive Director of Student Affairs during peak busy periods (including Check-In/Move-In Days, initial Fall housing for the academic year, etc.)

Resident Director 

  • Lead a staff of Resident Assistants in developing community and responding to the needs of approximately 100-240 residents
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings with the RA staff
  • Schedule and supervise RA duty
  • Document recurring issues noted in the Duty Log emails; report to the Executive Director of Student Affairs
  • Conduct monthly health and safety inspections with RA staff; follow up and report when necessary
  • Report violations of the Community Standards to the Executive Director of Student Affairs 
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of RA staff 
  • Assist with spring training as well as monthly in-service trainings for the RA staff
  • Evaluate the performance of each staff member at least once a semester 
  • Rotate on-call duty with other Resident Directors including weekends, vacation periods and holidays
  • Respond in emergent situations
  • Attend weekly Staff Meetings and weekly/biweekly one-on-one meetings with the Executive Director of Student Affairs
  • Coordinate programming within the hall
  • Participate in Student Outreach for various mental health and retention needs

General Student Affairs

  • Establish and maintain 40 office hours weekly in the Office of Student Affairs
  • Provide leadership through conduct, attitude, and professionalism. Set a standard and tone which will reflect well on the Division of Student Affairs and the College and will, as a result, provide students with a positive role model.
  • Understand the College’s policies and procedures and exercise judgment accordingly. Recommend policy changes and develop procedures to improve the Hall’s operation. Assure that students are safe and that confidential College information is handled appropriately.
  • Function as an active and cooperative member of the Division of Student Affairs and support the mission and goals of the department. Maintain active involvement in all student affairs activities and assist when necessary.

This is a Full time, non-exempt, 12-month, employee at will. It is expected this position will require approximately 40 hours/week to satisfactorily complete the job requirements. Some evenings and weekends are required. 

Reporting Relationship: This position is a dual role position reporting to the Director of Student Life for Front Desk and General Office tasks and to the Executive Director of Student Affairs for all Housing and Resident Director tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university required; one to two years of related experience preferred.

Experience: Ability to function professionally in stressful, and possibly emergent situations; Ability to provide accurate information on an impromptu basis; Ability to work evening/weekend hours and travel as needed; Good communication skills, organized, and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously; Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and the community-at-large; Highly motivated and works well both independently and in a team environment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment involves some exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals; also includes exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Work outside involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Frequent conference-wide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; frequent evening/weekend hours; travel as needed. Work performed indoors is generally wit ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.

 

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching, and pulling on a frequent basis. Proper lifting techniques required.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to perform athletic training techniques, use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.
