JOB SUMMARY

As Music Ministry Director at Bethel Lutheran Ministries you will hold a dual-role leading the music ministry, serving both at Bethel Lutheran church and at our K-8 school. You will help Bethel deliver on our mission to help people Meet Jesus. Find Connection. Make a Difference. Primary to this role, you will work closely with the pastors, elders, and musicians to ensure the entire church congregation can connect to God through music in both traditional and contemporary worship settings. In addition, you will provide hands-on music training to our K-8 students within the school setting, teaching them how to make music to God’s glory, and helping to tie the church and school ministries together into one. You will steward the resources of our congregation in the area of musical gifting and instrumentation, providing structure and leadership across the entire music program and helping the congregation glorify God and connect ever closer in worship through music.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (CHURCH 60%):

  • Drives the overall music ministry forward, leveraging direction from the Pastors and Elders.
  • Meets with pastors to make traditional and contemporary selections in accordance with the readings and sermon topics planned, and in support the distinct worship service styles offered.
  • Arranges for selected traditional organ hymns to be played in service. This may be done in whole or in part using 3rd party contractors, volunteers, direct hands-on, etc, depending on musical gifting.
  • Able to advocate for change when needed, and always puts the Lord’s glory and the spiritual best interests of His people at the forefront of all decisions.
  • Oversees Contemporary Praise Bands: Regularly meets with leaders to handle scheduling & logistics, provide leadership, direction and feedback, ensure consistency, continuity, and pursue quality. Assists in recruiting. Provides support and aids in conflict resolution as needed.
  • Brings new ideas and new music selections, while also honoring traditional pieces and styles. Has an appreciation for both traditional and contemporary worship music.
  • Seeks input from pastors in context of both musical and theological review. Chooses music selections that are in accord with Bethel’s theological stance and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
  • Purchases and stores sheet and electronic music. Keeps a log of music used in services for use with CCLI.
  • Has direct hands-on involvement in making music during worship service, according to musical ability and gifting. Regularly attends all 3 weekend worship services.
  • Recruits and arranges opportunities for larger musical ensembles for special services such as Christmas, Easter, and Reformation.
  • Ensures opportunities for Adult Choir(s). Supports the leadership of the Bell Choir.
  • Co-leads the children’s Christmas Program in conjunction with the Sunday School leadership.
  • Recruits and schedules soloists and special ensembles from within the congregation throughout the year. Maintains an active list of musicians and helps make arrangements for willing participants to be successful in their musical offering.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (SCHOOL 40%):

  • Provides music instruction for grades K-8, one class each week, per grade.
  • Provides weekly opportunities for after school choir(s).
  • Intentionally involves Bethel students in worship services several times throughout the year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Degree in music ministry or music education, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in church music leadership or participation.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience in Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) worship settings.
  • Experience and certification in K-8 education
  • Ability to build and highly functional teams of musicians
  • Build good working relationships and collaborative team member
  • Effective communication and skill in team building and conflict resolution.
  • Soundboard and technology experience

Starting date April-June 2025.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
