- Collaborate with the Secondary Teaching and Learning Director on continued alignment of the Washington State Social Studies Standards with the district curriculum including developing and/refining curriculum guides.
- Work with grade level and department leaders on implementing the Washington State Social Studies and literacy CCSS standards.
- Develop with teachers common assessments and rubrics for each course.
- Assist teachers and schools in using assessment data to inform instruction and school improvement plans.
- Facilitate teachers’ use of best practices in instruction, this includes a strong focus on discipline specific literacy and standards based culturally responsive instruction.
- Support data driven instructional decision-making.
- Collaborate with Teaching and Learning to facilitate curriculum adoptions.
- Support departmental PLCs.
- Attend professional development to maintain understanding of current research in standards-based instruction learning and awareness of state initiatives.
- Build learning, collegial relationships with individual staff members.
- Collaborate and calibrate with other TOSAs from the Teaching and Learning department to support goals.
- Provide professional development planning and facilitation for classroom teachers in a variety of settings.
- Effectively manage projects and time with clear outcomes and results.
- Perform other duties/task as assigned by supervisor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Secondary Social Studies Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) will work collaboratively with the Teaching and Learning Directors and TOSAs. The TOSA will work closely with early career classroom and classroom teachers, department leaders, and building administrators. Responsibilities will include facilitating curriculum alignment, supporting schools with using common assessments and data, mentoring early career teachers, and providing instructional coaching. The TOSA will be responsible for collaborating with the Director and Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning to facilitate and lead the Induction Program. The TOSA will use best practices in mentoring and instructional coaching with an equity lens and use data to progress monitor the program’s effectiveness. A substantial amount of time will be spent in schools mentoring early career teachers. In addition, the TOSA will work to support High School Social Studies, Advanced Programs in Social Studies, and elective courses. The Secondary Social Studies TOSA will be an essential team member of the Secondary Teaching and Learning Department.

This position receives a $4,000 stipend for functions related to those above that extend beyond the regular workday/work year. A non-exhaustive list of those activities includes: content leader meetings, induction meetings, instructional materials training, curriculum adoption/selection meetings, Equity Team participation, and other special projects. These activities are subject to change and not all meetings/trainings/other activities are attended by all TOSAs. CONDITIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience
Valid Washington State Teacher certification.
5 years of successful Social Studies teaching experience.
Experience on state and/or district instructional committees.
Experience in leadership activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to articulate ideas and communicate well with others.
Ability to organize ideas, coordinate multiple tasks and materials to accomplish goals
Ability to organize time and commit to a flexible work schedule.
Experience collaborating with teachers and administration around instructional practices.
Desired Qualifications/Characteristics
Master's Degree and/or National Board Certification preferred.
High School Social Studies teaching experience preferred.
High School Advanced Placement and/or Cambridge Social Studies teaching and leading preferred.
BEST Mentor experience preferred.
Extensive background in instructional strategies, equity, culturally responsive teaching, classroom management strategies, assessments, and deep knowledge of the standards-based instruction and grading.
Be apprised of requirements of programs and initiatives from OSPI to implement (i.e. Tribal Sovereignty, C3 Frameworks, etc.).
Knowledge of the Beginning Educator Support Team.
