    GENERAL SUMMARY
    Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Transportation, the Transportation Supervisor is responsible for directing the daily transportation operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable student transportation. This position requires expertise in driver and bus assistant supervision, student management, compliance, and emergency response while fostering positive relationships with staff, schools, and families.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Oversees daily operations of bus drivers and bus assistants, including scheduling, coordination, performance, and evaluation.
    • Evaluates bus drivers and bus assistants in coordination with the Assistant Director to apply objective evaluation criteria to assess each driver and bus assistant’s overall performance during their probationary period and annually.
    • Exercises independent judgment to assess and resolve unanticipated operational challenges, ensuring minimal disruption to transportation services while maintaining safety, compliance, and efficiency.
    • Serves as primary liaison between schools, bus drivers, and bus assistants, fostering collaboration and addressing concerns proactively to create a cohesive approach to student transportation.
    • Investigates student misconduct on school buses; administers student discipline according to district policy and procedures; coordinates with drivers, building administrators, parents/guardians, and students to resolve misconduct issues.
    • Advocates and promotes the importance of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports); plans and implements workshops and trainings for drivers and bus assistants for PBIS.
    • Provides input and recommendations regarding District transportation services.
    • Coordinates responses to emergency transportation situations and vehicle problems and malfunctions ensuring minimal disruption to service.
    • Establishes and maintains positive public relations with parents, schools, and departments; coordinates with transportation department staff, schools, and public to resolve concerns.
    • Coordinates and assists with accident and collision investigations; prepares accident reports; and coordinates with law enforcement and emergency responders.
    • Ensures driver and operational compliance with relevant state and federal laws and regulations; assists in the administering of the drug testing program and other DOT driver qualifications.
    • Coordinates and assists with the Driver Safety Program, School Bus Driver Authorization Training, and Driver Training Program.
    • Assists in recruitment, hiring, and evaluation processes to maintain a high-performing transportation team.
    • Administers the collective bargaining agreement; assists with or conducts investigations regarding alleged misconduct; may assist with grievances and other contract disputes.
    • Maintains and secures transportation-related data; maintains and secures confidential records; maintains transportation database; prepares reports as requested and/or required.
    • Represents the district on various internal and external committees as appropriate or assigned.
    • Maintains constructive, proactive relationships with students, parents, and district staff, fostering collaborative communication and resolving concerns efficiently.
    • Conducts inclement weather road inspections to assess transportation safety.
    • Uses technology for planning, managing, communication, presentations, training and workshops.
    • Attends staff and other professional meetings as may be assigned or necessary.
    • Serves on District leadership teams; works collaboratively with leadership teams and other interdepartmental teams; provides reports and/or data as requested.
    • May be required to drive a school bus as needed.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and Experience
    • Minimum of five (5) years experience in school district transportation operations or related field, with at least three (3) years experience in a supervisory or training capacity.
    • Certificate of Completion of the OSPI/CWU Pupil Transportation Management Program or be currently enrolled in the program.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Demonstrated strong leadership, supervisory, and team management skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle multiple priorities under pressure.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Knowledge of P-12 and special education pupil transportation laws, safety standards, and industry regulations.
    • Ability to research, analyze, and interpret data, policies, and regulations.
    • Knowledge of PBIS and/or other proven student management programs.
    • Knowledge of industry-accepted procedures for accident investigation.
    • Ability to interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with labor relations principles, employment law, and collective bargaining agreements while analyzing relevant policies, regulations, and contractual obligations.
    • Skill in public speaking, employee training, and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.
    • Proficiency in transportation management software, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and district systems to analyze information, prepare reports, memos, correspondence, and other job-related documents and materials.
    • Ability to achieve productive working relationships with union advocates and other departmental advocates.
    • Ability to be flexible in adapting to changes in priorities, assignments, and other interruptions, which may impact pre-established timelines and courses of action for completing projects and assignments.
    • Ability to use and operate a variety of basic office equipment such as, but not limited to, copiers, scanners, fax machines, and electronic communication devices to send and receive sensitive information.
    • Ability to convey respect for diverse individuals and perspectives, and take the lead in modeling inclusive and culturally competent behavior.
    • Ability to assess critical and emotionally-charged situations and make timely and appropriate decisions.
    • Ability to work long hours beyond the normal work day and be accessible including in the event of emergency school closures.
    • Ability to represent the district in a professional and timely manner and ability to work independently.

    Licenses/Certifications/Special Requirements
    • Valid OSPI driver/trainer certification
    • Valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement, and removal of air brake restriction
    • Current and valid medical examiner’s certificate or ability to obtain within three (3) months
    • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates
    • Certification in reasonable suspicion determination (or ability to obtain one within 60 days)
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    Generally sedentary in nature; occasionally stand and walk; intermittently kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, bend and twist at the waist, and reach overhead; sit for long periods of time. Hear and speak to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to include repetitive keyboarding, grasping and reaching to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and/or standard office equipment. Visual acuity to perceive color, depth, distance, size, and visual field to operate a motor vehicle.
    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Work is primarily performed in an office environment where noise, distractions, and lack of privacy may be present. Operate a motor vehicle, including buses. Exposure to traffic, dust, road noise, exhaust fumes, and extremes of temperature. May encounter members of the public who are angry, upset, or hostile. Communicates with individuals representing a variety of cultural backgrounds and who may have limited English language proficiency. May be called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Must wear personal protective equipment when necessary. May be required to work long hours beyond normal work day.
    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
    This position reports to the Assistant Director of Transportation.
    UNIT AFFILIATION
    This is a non-union, Specialist Level 2 exempt position.
