Director of Health Services (Campus Nurse)
The Director of Health Services (DoHS) at Bethel University must be a committed Christian. The DoHS should envision ways that God can be touching the student body through the services of the Wellness Center. OVERALL FUNCTION
The Director of Health Services reports to the Vice President for Student Development & Success. The DoHS is responsible for supporting the people, functions, vision, policies and operations of the Wellness Center; enabling excellent patient care; providing quality health services; being a part of a supportive team to deliver quality health care to students; enhancing health services through creative approaches; maintaining compliance with all health industry standards and laws; protecting the college from unnecessary risk.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Be familiar with and maintain all Wellness Center policies, procedures, protocols, and precautions.
- Stay up to date regarding changes in health care law, policy, expectations and practices that may affect the college.
- Maintain a positive relationship with Wellness Center colleagues, and interdepartmental personnel.
- Be a liaison for wellness and safety issues to the campus community.
- Maintain reports of efforts: consistent logs, semester and annual reports for the Vice President.
- Supervise the collection of health histories each summer and fall, and mandatory immunization status on each new student. Communicate with students on arrival if follow up as needed. Review health histories for allergies and medical illness of new students and follow up on all serious issues.
- Maintain and update student health records.
- Ensure the working condition of campus heath care equipment.
- Coordinate emergency response training (i.e. CPR) for campus personnel.
- Serve on (or send a nurse representative) the college's Incident Management Team, which creates and reviews policies related to incidents and emergencies that may arise.
- Care for minor injuries and illness as needed.
- Refer patients to counseling services when needed.
- Make appropriate referrals to other health care providers or facilities.
- Communicate with local hospital ER staff when patient is referred to ER.
- Coordinate care with outside agencies when appropriate.
- Communicate with parents when necessary and consent obtained.
- Instruct patients on use, side effects of medications.
- Provide crutches, bandages, splints, etc. and keep record of loaned equipment.
- Provide patient education such as use of medication, side effects, communicable disease prevention, etc. as appropriate.
- Ensure that clear and accurate communication is occurring with patients, staff, etc.
- Follow up with seriously ill patients; make contact with Resident Directors, parents, Wellness Center staff, and the Vice President as needed.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Coordinate with Study Abroad leaders regarding pre and post immunizations for students and teams that travel overseas.
- Monitor and oversee the budget.
- Participate in professional organizations and training that pertain to the role.
- Advise university staff on care for students, specifically Resident Directors as needed.
- Counsel students and refer as necessary regarding spiritual, personal, emotional or academic problems.
- Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with Bethel University's mission and goals. Be familiar with and supportive of the college's policies as outlined in the employee manual, community life covenant and student handbook.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned by Vice President.
QUALIFICATIONS
Christian; Registered Nurse with Bachelor of Nursing Degree or above; 5 years of clinical experience, current CPR certified, ability to work without direct supervision; quality clinical skills; computer skills, discerning, strong planner, organizer, and communicator.
COMPENSATION STRUCTURE
This is a part time, hourly paid, roughly 9 month (Mid-August to Mid-May) position with some limited summer hours to care for certain duties.
