Job Summary

The Head Men’s Basketball Coach oversees all aspects of the Men’s Basketball team. This position is responsible for strategy development, practice and game scheduling, player management and team success while representing Bethel University in a Christ-like manner. This position is also responsible for an auxiliary role in the athletic department.

Responsibilities

  • Coaching and Development – 30%
    • Lead practice organization, planning, execution.
    • Lead competitive planning.
    • Lead and direct coaching staff in program/player development.
    • Create and maintain a culture that aligns with the mission of Bethel University and emphasizes a program culture that centers on Jesus.
    • Maintain a high commitment to academic excellence within the student-athletes in the sport program. Understand institutional, MIAC, and NCAA academic requirements to ensure academic progress and retention.
  • Recruitment - 25%
    • Actively Identify and recruit prospective student-athletes that fit the profile of Bethel University.
    • Work with University admissions to guide prospects through the admissions process.
    • Have retention rates that align with program goals and the department (average for current programs is 65-75%).
  • Auxiliary role in the Athletic Department as assigned by the Athletic Director. – 20%
  • Manages Program Logistics - 15%
    • Oversee the logistics of team travel.
    • Ensure team operations follow NCAA and MIAC guidelines.
    • Ensure team operations follow institution policies and expectations.
    • Actively engage with alumni and cultivate relationships.

  • Operational Management 10%
    • Manage the program budget and oversee all program expenses in alignment with university policies and procedures.
    • Actively work with athletic fundraising and university advancement on budget shortfalls, projects, and additional opportunities.

    Experience

    3 years of experience coaching men’s basketball at the NCAA level or equivalent experience.

    Education

    Bachelor’s degree.

    Additional Information

    Travel: This position requires frequent local travel and some regional and national travel.

     

    Work Environment:

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop and/or laptop computers, photocopiers and smartphones.

    The work environment involves working for a suburban, Christian university in which all employees are expected to have a demonstrated commitment and personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a commitment to the mission and values of the University, and an agreement to abide by all University policies.

     

    Physical Demands:

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.     Expected Hours of Work:

      Typically, days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, with the expectation to work specific schedules and hours as identified and communicated by management. Frequent evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. This is a 40 hour per week, 12 months per year position.
