II. QUALIFICATIONS
A. A four-year college degree in an applicable subject area is preferred or at least two years of professional experience related to youth programming and library service
B. Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with staff and patrons; must
possess excellent customer service skills
C. Reference skills, with proficiency in internet and online database searching
D. Must be flexible with schedule and work location, willing to cover coworker vacations and outreach events as needed
E. Must take initiative, use time efficiently, pay attention to detail, troubleshoot and resolve problems
F. Must demonstrate skill or a desire to learn the skill of facilitating dynamic story times
using expression, music and movement, flannel board rhymes, and other storytelling
resources
G. Ability to meet physical and environmental demands of the position – sitting for long periods of time; lifting and moving boxes of books and materials weighing up to 40 pounds; physical mobility to reach all shelving
H. Must maintain a professional appearance on the job
III. JOB SUMMARY
The Outreach Technician is responsible for providing assistance with circulation,
information, outreach, and youth programming. The ideal candidate will serve as an
exemplary representative of the library to creatively and effectively promote the library’s mission and services.
IV. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Performs general duties at the Circulation desk
B. Provides reference and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons
C. Plans and implements engaging programs for children, teens, and/or families, including a selection of age-appropriate titles and a learning activities for story times
D. Stays informed of and promotes library activities, programs, and services; assists with creating early literacy handouts and marketing materials using Canva
E. Participates in the overall neatness of the library by accurately shelving materials,
performing light tidying tasks, and maintaining attractive and timely information displays
F. Reads and reviews new materials. Keeps current with trends in children’s library
programming
G. Other duties as assigned by supervisor
