The Children's Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf

 

Located in Beverly, Massachusetts, The Children’s Center for Communication and Beverly School for the Deaf (CCCBSD) is a school for Deaf and Hearing children ages 3 to 22 with unique developmental, physical, and communication needs.

 

REPORTS TO:  

Primary – Chief Program Officer. Secondary – Education Director

 

SUMMARY:

The TVI provides direct and consultative vision services to children with a range of communication, physical, behavioral, and/or developmental challenges. S/he/they will adapt and develop materials to match the special and unique needs of each individual student. The TVI is responsible for scheduling and maintaining communication among team members as well as completing all paperwork associated with evaluations, medical reports, and other related student documentation.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO HERE:

  1. Read records, observe and assess students, consult with other generalists, specialists, and parents or other caregivers.
  2. Review individual education plans (IEPs) and determine the needs of each student. Prepare goals, objectives and lessons based on program approved curriculum or other appropriate resources to meet the students needs.
  3. Prepare and provide instruction directly to students with hand-on  instruction, modeling, enlarged print, tactual material or compensatory devices needed to help the student arrive at appropriate goals.
  4. Use objective criteria, assess student progress through evaluation of tasks and assignments, and report according to IEP requirements on student progress in meeting individual objectives.
  5. Prepare reports and meet the program deadlines for submission of completed reports.
  6. Participate in meetings and serve as a member of the team which is responsible for development and delivery of programs for each student and for overall program planning.
  7. Plan and supervise activities in a manner which will safeguard the health and safety of students. 
  8. Design educational programming commensurate with the current best practice in the field of Special Education including: 
  9. Understand Functional curriculum; Age-Appropriateness; Community experience; Integration of related services; Context-based instruction; Expanded Core Curriculum, or as determined by appropriate assessments.
  10. Maintain communication with the family as recommended by the team. Maintain appropriate records and provide these to the program file.
  11. Provide formal and informal consultation with families, classroom teachers, teaching assistants, and related service providers to direct and coordinate their involvement with the students in the classroom setting.



WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TABLE:

Minimum requirement is a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Preferred qualifications are to have a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of 3 years experience in a special education program directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Coursework in education, special education, communication disorders, or early-childhood preferred.  Previous successful classroom experience in an academic setting.  Demonstrate the ability to respect diversity and help children develop a positive self-image as successful learners.  

Massachusetts Department of Education Certification - Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments; Orientation and Mobility Certification preferred. 

  • Ability to communicate in a highly effective manner.
  • Ability to understand, follow and deliver safety policy and procedures. 
  • Ability to provide direct staff supervision, leadership, and role modeling for all classroom personnel. 
  • Ability to provide supportive, creative and active learning for all children that encourages growth. 
  • Ability to receive professional direction, learn new skills, and work in a team setting. 
  • Knowledge of behavioral management, special needs, and communication technology issues.  
  • Have a wide range of experience with students with diverse needs, developmental delays and visual needs. 

 

OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

  • Successful candidates are encouraged to enroll in additional ASL class(es) provided by CCCBSD.
  • Successful candidates will present appropriate certifications as required by DESE.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to a variety of safety elements, including moderate physical activity, student behavior, student hygiene.
  • The environment may require physically assisting students with a weight, up to and in excess of 40 pounds  
  • Work environment may involve operation of school vehicles in the transportation of students to and from community settings.
