What are the responsibilities and job description for the Archivist position at Bexar County?
Under direction, is responsible for maintaining the County Clerk's historical Spanish and archive translation records; translates, transcribes and indexes historical records; monitors record retention, disposition and destruction of transferred historical records; assists the public with genealogy, historical, title and deed questions; prepares correspondence; conducts tours; makes historical event presentations; assists other County departments with records research; attends meetings and coordinates historical functions; maintains the historical display case; and performs related duties as required
- Maintains Bexar County Spanish Colonial, Mexican and Republic of Texas archives, translations and historical documents
- Translates, transcribes and indexes historic records for use and reference by outside agencies, historical organizations and the public
- Monitors County record retention, legal disposition and destruction and serves as liaison with the Texas State Library in establishing guidelines for maintaining historical records under Texas statute requirements
- Assists other County employees, historical organizations, title companies and the public with research pertaining to genealogy, historical event, will, title, and deed ownership questions
- Prepares correspondence involving archived documents and historical records research
- Writes articles for local and Texas history for schools, newspapers and historical organizations upon request
- Conducts tours of the County Clerk archives for visiting students and outside organizations
- Attends various meetings on behalf of the County Clerk
- Maintains the County Clerk's historical display case with topical and current event displays
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in History, Library Science, Spanish, or closely related field, and two (2) years research including translation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Considerable knowledge of the written and spoken English and Spanish language, both formal and informal; considerable knowledge of historical research techniques and procedures; good knowledge of Spanish Colonial, Mexican and Republic of Texas history
- Skill in interpreting and translating colonial and modern Spanish into English
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; ability to read maps and property documents; ability to make presentations; ability to operate personal computer and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, other government agencies, outside organizations, Department Heads, Elected/Appointed Officials, the news media and the public
- Acts in the name of the County Clerk and shall perform all official acts as may be lawfully done and performed by such Clerk in person, pursuant to 82.005(c) of the Texas Local Government Code
- Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
