What are the responsibilities and job description for the Automotive Journeyman - Light Fleet Maintenance position at Bexar County?
Under general supervision, performs a variety of advanced mechanical work on vehicles; removes, repairs, and replaces defective components; utilizes computer analyzers and testers to determine defective or malfunctioning components; inspects, checks and analyzes operational conditions of vehicle systems; installs and removes special equipment; conducts vehicle permit inspections; and performs related duties as required
- Tests and analyzes malfunctions by utilizing computer test equipment
- Performs engine tune-up work
- Services and repairs brake systems
- Services or repairs engines, transmissions and rear-end axles
- Removes and replaces ball joints, and upper and lower A-frame bushings
- Checks, removes or repairs electrical system parts, starters, battery charging components
- Removes and replaces defective coil springs and other suspension system parts
- Removes and replaces motor and transmission mounts
- Removes, repairs, or replaces vehicle components including fuel pumps, universal joints, carburetors, engine heads, valves, and springs
- Removes, repairs or replaces air-conditioning, engine cooling, and power steering system components
- Installs and removes all emergency equipment on police cars such as sirens, emergency lights, radar units, video cameras, telephones, interior cages, push bumpers and computers/M.D.T. (Mobile Data Transmitters)
- Performs state safety inspection on vehicles in accordance with state requirements
- Performs related duties as required
- Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, and four (4) years’ experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic; additional education in a related field may be substituted for experience
- Knowledge of computerized and electronic testing equipment; knowledge of the operation of electrical and electronic/computerized vehicle systems; knowledge of reading and interpreting pressure and electrical testing gauges; knowledge of vehicle operating systems
- Skill in using power tools, parts removal and special equipment; skill in removal and installation sequence of parts; skill to determine problems and malfunctioning of systems and parts
- Ability to determine what tools to utilize; ability to determine torque requirements; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, clerical staff and the public
- Must be certified in at least four categories by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence; must be ASE or IMACA (International Mobile Air Conditioning Association) certified for automotive air conditioning work
- Must provide or furnish own hand tools
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Working conditions are primarily indoors with exposure to temperature variations; occasional exposure to hazardous fluids such as gasoline, oil, antifreeze, Freon, battery acids, solvents and fumes
- Frequently lifts or moves items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally moves items weighing up to 75 pounds
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
