Under general direction, plans and administers individual treatment plans for survivors of domestic violence and their families, reports allegations of child abuse, neglect and/or exploitation; and provides case coordination. This Licensed Professional Counselor may assist with the coordination and facilitation of group therapy for survivors and their children; and works closely with all members of the Bexar County Family Justice Center staff. Tasked with evaluating the urgent mental health needs of survivors of domestic violence. The Licensed Professional Counselor adheres to the standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors.
 
The hiring and continuation of this position is contingent upon the award and availability of grant funds.
This position is not covered under Bexar County Civil Service
  • Provides crisis and individual counseling for survivors of domestic violence and also may assist with group counseling sessions
  • Conducts family therapy when appropriate with survivors of domestic and family violence and their families
  • Documents and maintains progress notes on all counseling sessions; maintains statistical records for reporting purposes
  • Develops individual treatment plans for survivors
  • Provides case coordination, working closely with all members of the Bexar County Family Justice Center which includes, but is not limited to, the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s staff, San Antonio Police Department’s staff and Child Therapists, Child Protective Services, Dream Center staff, Catholic Charities staff and University Counseling interns
  • Reports allegations of child abuse, neglect and/or exploitation to authorities
  • Provides presentations to staff, local government, non-profit and community service agencies, local school districts, the local business community and the general public when appropriate;
  • Provides on-call coverage during work hours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in clinical emergencies
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in a mental health related field; licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor and has met the qualifications mandated by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors; and at least two (2) years of counseling experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of professional psychological counseling; developmental stages of adolescents; diagnoses and medications; knowledge of basic individual and group counseling techniques; court protocol; principles of supervisory management; case management; mediation and behavior modification techniques; social services delivery network; residential placement and/or social service agencies
  • Knowledge of domestic violence services and community service agencies; knowledge of the court system and documents; and public assistance programs
  • Ability to deal with hostile or violent individuals; dealing effectively with survivors of domestic violence; interviewing in crisis situations; teaching counseling management principles; and completing psychological assessments
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; compile and analyze data; manage time effectively; develop, organize, motivate, and effectively utilize staff; respond to questions and complaints; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, Elected/Appointed Officials, Department/Division Heads, County employees, other government agencies, outside organizations and the public
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish and English, both verbally and in writing. Proven professional experience in treating our target client populations; including adults and minor victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault, child neglect and abuse while utilizing trauma focused approach.
