What are the responsibilities and job description for the Office Assistant I - Sheriff's Office position at Bexar County?
Under direct supervision, is responsible for general clerical/secretarial duties; and performs related duties as required.
- Types letters and memos utilizing a personal computer, typewriter and/or word processor
- Assists with court desk
- Maintains logs on all documents received and processed
- Enters and updates data in a personal computer or CRT
- Answers telephone, routes calls and takes messages
- Develops and maintains files
- Accesses and files information
- Copies information and distributes to appropriate location
- Responds to general questions and complaints regarding department or work
- Performs related duties as required
- Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, and one (1) year general office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of English spelling, grammar and punctuation; knowledge of office procedures
- Skill in operating a personal computer, typewriter and basic office equipment
- Ability to give a clear and detailed shift activity account to incoming shift; ability to maintain a good line of communication with supervisor and BCSO staff assigned to the PIC; ability to handle sensitive situations and confidential information; ability to accurately enter data and file information; ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the general public
- Must become familiar with the intake and release, and bail bond process for persons in custody
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Shift assignments may be day, evening, overnight or weekends
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
- Working conditions are in an office within a jail environment
- Possible exposure to hostile or violent people and contagious diseases
- Constantly working in indoor conditions
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 10-15 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
