What are the responsibilities and job description for the Probate & Estates Clerk position at Bexar County?
Under general supervision, answers questions face to face and via telephone; performs data entry; prepares abstracts of judgment and execution; prepares clerk's records; prepares files for transfer, responsibly processes electronic filing; assist in training and performs related duties as required
- All functions currently performed by Court Operations Clerk
- Prepares clerk's record and monitors its due dates for filing in the 4th Court of Appeals
- Verifies data integrity across systems
- Builds and prepares service of case documents, subpoenas, citations, writs, letters testamentary, guardianships, and etcetera
- Scans legal documents/wills and maintains originals
- Maintains the registry of wills tendered to the court for safekeeping until reclaimed by heir(s)
- Processes and maintains original wills, and processes incoming electronic filings
- Performs cashiering responsibilities
- Assists and acts as a backup to Court Clerks
- Performs other duties as required
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate and three (3) years general office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of legal terminology; knowledge of basic office procedures
- Skill to type 40 words per minute with no more than 7 errors; Requires recent typing test administered by hired date (Typing Tests may be administered by Department, Human Resources, Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Centers)
- Skill in basic mathematical calculations
- Ability to understand and apply appropriate statutes and codes; ability to accurately collect cash; ability to accurately enter data; ability to deal with hostile or irrational individuals; ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to operate a personal computer, 10 key-adding machine, typewriter and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, attorneys, outside organizations and the general public
- Acts in the name of the County Clerk and shall perform all official acts as may be lawfully done and performed by such Clerk in person, pursuant to Section 82.005(c) of the Texas Local Government Code
- Must be bondable
- Must have legible penmanship
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek

- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 40 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
