What are the responsibilities and job description for the Textile Sewing Instructor position at Bexar County?
Under direct supervision, responsible for providing sewing skills and instruction to the inmate population of the Bexar County Jail; provides hands-on instruction and sewing skills on the safe operation of sewing equipment; evaluates sewing performance; prepares recruiting efforts in finding inmates to participate in the sewing program; maintains activity logs; completes various sewing tasks; and performs related duties as required.
Provide step-by-step instructions to inmates in the safe and proper use of sewing equipment.Demonstrate hands-on training of accurately measuring, cutting and sewing textile and fabric to repair inmate uniforms, mattresses and other clothing items.
Conducts evaluation and inspection of inmates’ work and ensures repairs and sewing products meet specified requirements.
Ensuring that sewing machines and other equipment are in good working order, and notify supervisor when work orders are required.
Maintains proper inventory of supplies and equipment, and submits orders of fabric, materials and supplies to keep inventory stocked.
Visit living units to advertise and recruit possible candidates to participate in the sewing program.
Communicating with customers to determine their specifications, needs, and preferences.
Using irons and pressing machines to erase the creases on garments and other articles
Performs related duties as requiredGraduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years’ experience of sewing or textile experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Sound knowledge of various fabrics and sewing techniques.
The ability to safely use different types of sewing machines.
Ability to interact with inmates, and to understand and comprehend inmate responses to questions
Ability to provide verbal direction to inmates to affect conformance to rules, regulations, and other directives
Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle
Must not have a felony conviction or be on probation
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff Office
Must possess a valid driver's license
Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Physical Capabilities: Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5-10 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard, typewriter and basic office equipment. Subject to reaching, walking, handling and twisting to perform essential functions.
Working conditions are inside a jail environment with occasional exposure to hostile or violent people, bodily injury, contagious diseases, high noise areas, and unfavorable fumes and odors

Tasks and special requirements unique to an individual office or department may be addressed through a separate list of detailed specifications prepared by that office/department and subject to approval by Human Resources and the Civil Service Commission.
Office/department specifications may not be more complex nor at a higher level of responsibility than any of those contained in this position description
