Job Summary
The Youth Education Coordinator works to educate youth to advocate for environmental and climate justice and resiliency (ECJ), civic engagement, decarbonization/fossil fuel reductions and green energy, air quality and environmental protections and economic justice.

The position reports to the Beyond Toxics Executive Director and works closely with staff to create leadership development programs and learning content in support of climate justice projects and policies that advance racial justice and a Just Transition within Oregon.

The Youth Education Coordinator will serve community members throughout Oregon, with a special focus on youth in Lane County who are impacted by climate change, environmental injustices, environmental degradation and economic disparities.

The Youth Education Coordinator will work with communities to develop and implement education projects to empower communities based on the principles of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Working closely with educators and coalition partners, the Educator will elevate the social and environmental impacts of climate policy and champion informed decision-making to the general public, elected leaders, decision-makers and other institutions that make climate policies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design and implement various curricula, projects, and workshops related to climate resilience, trauma-informed practices, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies and public education.
  • Prepare and distribute educational materials in the community to improve understanding and bridge resource gaps.
  • Serve as project manager for Rise as Leaders and continue to build on the success of our Rise as Leaders youth leadership program, developing bi-annual cohorts of environmental justice youth advocates in the local community.
  • Support team members plan and participate in organizational events and community organizing to protect public health through advocacy for a healthy climate, clean air, land and water; serve on staff teams such as the Air Quality Team, the Environmental Justice Team, etc.
  • Support outreach to and relationship building with BIPOC partners and community members on youth education opportunities related to environmental health and climate equity projects.
  • Stay informed and up-to-date on climate policies, energy policies, toxics reduction and waste management and other regulations that affect climate outcomes.
  • Create and/or participate in community activities that heighten the awareness of the role the environment has in health outcomes and disease prevention, including coalition meetings, membership meetings, working group meetings, Earth Day celebrations, other celebrations, community conversations, and demonstrations.
  • Employ community organizing tools and tactics, including but not limited to door knocking, phone banking, surveys, 1 on 1s, forums and town hall meetings, work groups, testimony at public meetings, and strategic collaboration with other environmental justice organizations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work as a respectful and engaged team member with Beyond Toxics staff, board and advisors.
  • Attend staff meetings, carry out team assignments, and participate in organizational meetings and outreach events as necessary and as requested. Contribute to office cleanliness and organization.
  • Speak in public and educational settings representing and advocating for Beyond Toxics on climate and environmental justice policies and issues (which might include related issues impacting health, air, water, and land).
  • Contribute content for reports, newsletters, social media, and other communications.
  • Provide written and oral communication: i.e., writing letters, giving presentations, creating fliers, drafting agendas, writing and giving testimony, calling elected/appointed officials.
  • After hours and weekend work often required, especially during educational cohorts.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Must be willing to to register for Oregon Central Registry background check.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
