Job Title: Deputy Director
Full-time position of 40 hours per week

Reports to: Executive Director
Beyond Walls is a year-round after school program that empowers marginalized youth in grades 6th-12th through education enrichment, health and wellness, and social and emotional development. With support continuing for the first four years after high school, Beyond Walls provides long term relationships and meaningful opportunities that foster strong community partnerships and future forward thinking. Beyond Walls students are provided with academic support as well engaging community experiences to achieve post-secondary success by leveraging the sports of squash, pickleball, and padel. Beyond Walls strategically partners with the University of Minnesota and the Squash and Education Alliance (S.E.A.) At full capacity Beyond Walls works with approximately 50-70 youth in grades 6th-12 from key partner schools and over 25 college mentors.
Broad Job Scope and Function of Job:
Leads all facets of Beyond Walls academic afterschool programming sessions. Promotes developmental assets, leadership development skills and college preparatory skills in a group format for local youth grades 6-12 through intentional out-of-school time programming. Design academic programming to support their educational, civic leadership, life skills and positive adult relationships. Works to meet the goals of Beyond Walls. Ensures youth receive support from trained staff and volunteers who consistently reinforce student developmental needs, foster youth development, knowledge, and respect and understanding for people of diverse ethnicities and ages. Ability to relate and connect outreach to all segments of a multi-cultural community.
The responsibilities of the Deputy Director include, but are not limited to:
Program Development:
● Oversee the development and implementation of all programming to ensure high-quality and mission alignment.
o Ensure participant enrollment and high attendance to achieve full space utilization and maximum dosage/impact.
o Work directly with schools, families, and students in the classroom to support academic progress and strong partner relationships.
o With direction from ED, lead recruitment efforts for new students on the pillars of respect, effort, and character.
● Ensure maintenance of student standards and performance benchmarks.
o Plan, deliver, and evaluate daily homework help sessions in the classroom with students to support students’ schoolwork.
o Plan, supervise and direct impactful and innovative academic enrichment, team building, and leadership activities.
o Ensure a productive and positive environment at BW by managing student behavior and consistently instilling BW values.
o Build transformative relationships with students, providing individual feedback and support.
● Develop additional strategic planning documents to guide programming and overall vision.
● Maintain relationships with current partner schools to ensure consistent flow of participants and integration into school communities.
o Evaluate new school partnerships with an eye towards fit and mission alignment
● Help manage strategic relationships with our facility partners, community partners, and other community based organizations.
● Stay in constant communication with families to ensure they are kept informed about their child’s progress and are included as partners in programming; ensure families are aware of BW programming.
● Ensure academic volunteers are well trained, supported, and feel included.
Administrative Duties:
● Coordinate all program logistics including daily scheduling, program calendar, summer program structure and details.
● Assist as needed with grant writing to help BW reach financial goals
● Maintain and organize relevant documents in BW google folder
● Manage a portfolio of institutional funders, executing the grant process from prospect identification to proposal writing and reporting
Professional Development:
● Actively seeks to improve effectiveness via staff development opportunities, workshops, training and conferences etc.
● Identifies professional, on-going goals through the programming period.
Additional Accountabilities:
● Participate in travel opportunities with the organization, including day trips to visit colleges, and weekend trips to play tournaments.
● Driving 15 passenger van to and from various field trips with ample training provided.
● Attend all staff meetings and individual supervision meetings as scheduled.
Fulfill additional responsibilities at the discretion of the organization.
Education/Preferred Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s Degree in Child/Youth Development, Education, Social Sciences or related field
● Two or more years working in youth development
Additional Qualifications:
o Must maintain a valid MN Driver’s License and safe driving record
o Understanding of youth development and effective professional practices
