The Role
BGC is seeking a Junior to Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer with a focus on advanced numerical modelling and earthquake geotechnical engineering. While this position will focus on those two core competencies, the successful candidate should expect a diverse role that includes: advanced numerical analysis, advanced laboratory testing, field data collection, and reporting. This role can be based in any of BGC’s offices in North America or in Santiago, Chile.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will support our in-house geotechnical experts in advanced numerical modelling with FLAC2D and 3D. Detailed responsibilities include:
- Numerical modelling with finite element or finite difference codes, including earthquake dynamic analysis of soil structures and soil-structure interaction (FLAC 2D and 3D experience is preferred)
- Static and seismic liquefaction triggering assessment
- Evaluation of seismic slope stability and lateral spreading displacement, and liquefaction induced settlement
- Selection and scaling of earthquake time histories for numerical analysis
- Interpretation of seismic hazard reports and application to seismic design
- Laboratory testing including cyclic triaxial and cyclic simple shear
Required Education, Experience & Competencies
- Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, Geological Engineering, or a related field
- 0 - 7 years of experience in geotechnical engineering
- A strong theoretical understanding of soil mechanics (e.g. critical state soil mechanics) and geotechnical earthquake engineering
- Experience with deformation analysis tools such as FLAC 2D/3D
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer or E.I.T.
Desired Education, Experience & Competencies
- Post-graduate degree in civil or geotechnical engineering, with a focus on numerical modelling
- Experience in a consulting environment
- Experience with geotechnical and seismic software such as SHAKE or DEEPSOIL, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, SeismoSignal, RSPMatch
- Experience with 1D seismic site response analysis and liquefaction analysis
- Familiarity with some user defined constitutive models such as PM4Sand/PM4Silt, NorSand or UBCSAND/UBCHYST
- Experience with field investigation techniques such as CPT, SPT, BPT
- An interest in field investigation and advanced geotechnical analysis
Position Requirements
Drug & Alcohol Testing
To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position. The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.
Driver’s License
BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $75,000 - $115,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Cambio Earth's compensation package also includes an annual bonus, training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
