Description

The instrument and electrical technician position performs a variety of skilled electrical, process instrumentation, gas supply and communications functions in support of the plant and gas pipeline functions. Duties include performing power electrician work, process instrument technician work and gas pipeline work; including installing, maintaining, repairing, modifying and developing specifications for precision/process control instrumentation systems, AC and DC electrical systems to include low, medium and high voltage distribution systems, plant and user interfaces, monitor, analyze, control and meter processes, heating ventilation and air condition and supervisory control and date acquisition systems. Use and care of hand and power tools and basic process control theory to perform assigned tasks.


Responsibilities

  • Calibrates, installs, troubleshoots and repairs plant controls. Equipment includes transmitters, transducers, analyzers, valve positioners, level indicators, solenoid valves, performance monitoring systems, recorders, etc.
  • Inspects and maintains regulators such as relief regulators, self-operating, pilot-operated and control valves
  • Repairs and replaces parts and equipment such as seats, springs, diaphragms: adjusts set-point and performs other duties necessary for completion of work
  • Performs various types of work in connection with the installation, operation, maintenance of regulator, odorizing equipment border station and industrial regulator stations, including all auxiliary or control regulators and proper connection of control and loading lines to regulators
  • Inspects, repairs, maintains and cleans low voltage (600V) and medium voltage power distribution (4,160V) system components, motor control centers, switchgear and which may include transformers, circuit breakers, control switches, control and protective relays, switches, contactors and indicating lights
  • Programs, tests and troubleshoots programmable logic controllers
  • Calibrates, installs, troubleshoots and maintain plant continuous emissions monitoring systems
  • Handles preliminary work arrangements such as parts availability, shop inventory, maintains or creates Bill of Materials, etc.
  • Works with vendor, factory representatives, engineers and other company personnel as directed
  • May design and install new electrical systems when assigned
  • Inspects and maintains control systems such as boiler drum level, combustion and steam turbine controls and generator excitation systems
  • Troubleshoots and maintains the distributed control system
  • This may include tuning DCS controls, installing and upgrading hardware and directory maintenance where appropriate
  • Maintains logic diagrams, ladder-logic algorithms, loop diagrams and workstation control graphics
  • Maintains and troubleshoots HVAC systems
  • Installs and maintains plant lighting and communication systems
  • Inspects, repairs and maintains 125V dc station battery and 120V ac uninterruptible power sources
  • Performs gas leak survey on gas transmission line using flame ionization equipment to find the general location of a leak by vehicle transportation or walking length of right-of-way
  • Identifies and marks location of underground facilities for outside agencies, identifies potentially dangerous conditions
  • Refers to maps, construction drawings, records and uses a variety of equipment such as pipe/cable locator, metal detector, computer and associated software
  • Assist with keeping maps and records up-to-date
  • Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned

  • Journeyman electrical technician
  • Associate's or technical degree; relevant certification or equivalent work experience (Typically three years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess an associate or technical degree.)
  • Knowledge of personal computer software applications, including spreadsheet, word processing and database
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence accurately
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts including percentages, area, circumference and volume
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently
  • Must have a valid New York driver's license.
