Summary/Objective
The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing leadership for a designated patient care area. This individual has the accountability and responsibility for clinical operations ensuring that efficient and effective nursing care is provided to individuals and families in the patient care area in which they are employed. As a member of the Nursing Leadership Team, the NP makes decisions independently and in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Executive to promote the attainment of hospital goals in accordance with its mission.

Models’ excellence in nursing practice through the utilization of advanced concepts in the areas of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of perceived, actual or potential problems that occur in the critically ill patient. Assists with establishing and maintaining communication channels with medical staff and other departments within the hospital.

Functions as a facilitator and innovator for state-of-the-art nursing care with direct involvement in implementing and evaluating new techniques and equipment for safety, cost-effectiveness, and benefits related to nursing practice.

Assesses the multiplicity of patient care needs to prescribe an appropriate plan of care for the patient. Assesses and reassesses the patient’s condition on an ongoing basis. Appropriately prescribes medical/nursing therapies based on patients’ care needs. Collaborates with medical staff, clinical nurses, and other members of the health care team to problem solve complex clinical situations for specialty needs of patients. Assists and provides direction to nursing staff with clinical decision-making and priority setting.

Effectively interprets laboratory/diagnostic based on findings, evaluates patients’ responses to prescribed medical/nursing therapies. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients and families served, in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to age specific needs.

Disseminates research findings through presentations, maintains awareness of current developments, evidence-based practice, and trends in nursing research with a focus on the specific patient population in which they are employed.

Demonstrates a sound knowledge base of advanced nursing theory and practice, including principles of advanced physical assessment, and pharmacology. Responsible for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice.
Required Education and Experience
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
6 months - 1-year related experience
Required License/Certifications
Current APRN license in the State of Texas
BLS certification within 30 days of hire
Unit specific competencies obtained within six months of hire or date of transfer
