DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy (BCHA) is a 69-year-old, Pre-K through 12th grade, co-educational Jewish community day school guided by the principles of Modern Orthodoxy. Located in beautiful Stamford, Connecticut, BCHA serves over 360 students from across Connecticut and New York on an attractive 13-acre campus just 43 miles from midtown Manhattan. The school is renowned for its excellence in academic programs, student achievement, and broad co-curricular offerings.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy is seeking a dynamic, highly skilled, and visionary leader to serve as the Director of Communications, effective immediately. This is a full-time, in-person position with some after-hours work as needed. The Director of Communications will play an integral role in maintaining, marketing, and communicating the school’s positive image to current and prospective members of our local and broader community. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Branding, Messaging & Urgent Communications :
Implement and maintain the school’s marketing and branding strategy with consistent messaging across all media.
Oversee the creation, distribution, and upkeep of marquee messages—including urgent and time-sensitive communications both digitally and via the outdoor marquee—to ensure that key information is effectively relayed to the school community.
Support the Executive Leadership Program as well as fundraising and admissions communications initiatives.
Digital & Print Communications :
Maintain the continuously updated school website by creating and refreshing content, while liaising with IT for technical coordination.
Manage and update a comprehensive database to ensure accurate, timely communication and marketing outreach.
Coordinate and execute social media postings, ensuring regularity, consistency, and alignment with the school’s overall messaging and appearance.
Craft press releases, news stories, bulletin announcements, and other materials (both digital and print) to promote school programs, accomplishments, and events.
Create and compile content for the weekly school email blast.
Media Production & Event Coverage :
Handle photography and basic videography for website content, social media, printed materials, publicity, and events—including capturing activities on campus and at after-school events.
Organize and maintain a library of photo and video files.
Maintain a calendar of PR and marketing events to ensure all deadlines are met.
Marketing Materials & Advertising :
Assist with the design / creation and vendor coordination for marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, postcards, posters, banners, and signage to support Admissions, Marketing, Fundraising, and other staff needs.
Design and secure placement of print and digital advertising within budgetary guidelines.
Editorial & Organizational Excellence :
Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills to ensure all materials are error-free and meet strict deadlines.
Coordinate the implementation of a basic school “style guide” for teachers and administrators to promote a consistent appearance of messaging.
Additional Duties :
Work flexible hours as needed, including some evenings or weekends to support school events and communications requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, preferably within a school or non-profit organization.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, advertising, or a related field.
Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and strong proofreading abilities.
Demonstrated experience in photography, videography, and graphic design.
Proficient in digital communications, social media, website operations, and relevant software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, PhotoShop, WordPress, ConstantContact, Microsoft Office, Google Office Suite); experience with Blackbaud is highly preferred.
Ability to work under strict, changing deadlines while maintaining discretion and confidentiality.
A proactive approach to working outside of standard business hours as necessary.
