JOB SUMMARY :
Performs tasks related to the development, upkeep and maintenance of the ground and property of the school system using hand and power tools and equipment as necessary.

EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE :
- High school graduate or G.E.D. certificate required.
- Two (2) years of experience in general grounds work is required. (Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.)
- Must have a valid Georgia driver's license and be a qualified operator.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS :
Knowledge of the type and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in grounds maintenance;Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of grounds maintenance;Some knowledge of supervision and training;Ability to perform a variety of skilled laboring and manual tasks;Ability to understand and follow directions and instructions;Ability to work with standard power tools and equipment;Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance, under variable and frequently adverse weather conditions;Ability to maintain good working relationships with personnel of other departments;Skilled in the set-up, adjustment and use of the tools and equipment of the trade and in their care and maintenance.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Uses powered equipment and hand tools to create and / or improve drainage.Applies hardwood and pine straw mulch.Plants, trims, and / or dispose of lawns, trees, bushes, hedges, and shrubs using hand tools or motorized equipment and / or vehicles.Treat lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.Cleans, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on equipment used in grounds maintenance such as mowers, tractor / trailers, front-end loaders, and a variety of hand / power tools.Receives and carries out work orders as assigned or instructed;Performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and upkeep of school system property including; Operating zero turn, reel, rotary or push mowers, weed cutters, power trimmers, blowers, chainsaw, and sprayers to maintain lawn areas.Perform duties as planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, and sweeping; remove paper and debris from school system grounds and various other small hand power operated tools and equipment; utilizes non-power tools such as rakes, brooms, shovels, etc.;Drives vehicles such as cars, truck, or van to pick up other workers, supplies and materials.Complies with safety rules and regulations;Utilizes and maintains equipment and material in a responsible and reliable manner;Informs supervisor of materials, tools, supplies and equipment needs; keeps records and submits data and reports as required;Inspects physical condition of properties and report needed repairs.Performs related duties as required or assigned by supervisors.SALARY / TERMS / BENEFITS :
239 day work year (12 month position); eight (8) hours per day.Salary Range : Grade 26, Hourly $13.38 - $15.09 (placement on the salary schedule is based on years of allowed related experience). The stated salary range reflects the opportunity for pay over the course of the employee's tenure. Must be able to stand and walk the majority of the day, performing heavy manual labor; lift and carry twenty (20) to thirty (30) pounds on occasion, and up to sixty (60) pounds infrequently; push or pull same amounts frequently. Job also requires frequent bending and stooping. The job is performed outside the majority of the day, in all types of weather conditions.
