What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surface Grinder Operator/Machinist position at Big 3 Precision Products?
Job Responsibilities:
- Set-up and operate surface grinding machines to create accurate and square surfaces on precision injection blow mold tooling (IBM) components.
- Analyzes drawings/blueprints, specifications, or damaged tools to determine part dimensions to be ground.
- Selects the appropriate grinding wheel and set-up for each workpiece.
- Adjusts machine settings for precision grinding, such as speed/feed rates and holding fixtures.
- Mounts the grinding wheel and dress it according to specifications.
- Uses machine to grind smooth part surfaces to remove defects, sharp edges, scratches, and excess material.
- Inspects the finished product for quality and accuracy to ensure it meets specifications.
- Performs machine maintenance, such as changing worn grinding wheels and checking them for cracks.
- Adheres to all company policies and safety rules, policies & procedures, such as using proper wheel guards. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Skills:
- Must be able to surface grind within ±.0003 of an inch.
- Utilize gauge blocks, indicators, micrometers, etc. to inspect for smooth flat square surfaces.
- Ability to size grinding ferromagnetic metals and non-magnetic metals with construction blocks. Typical work materials include stainless steel and aluminum.
- Knowledge of standard grinding wheels (Alum. Oxide Silicon Carbide)
- Grit and bonding fixturing including precision angle block, etc.
- High School education or equivalency minimum.
- Technical School associate’s degree or equivalent preferred.
- 3-5 years of surface grinding experience preferred.
- Plastics Injection Blow Molding (IBM) experience preferred.
Abilities:
- Speak, read, and write in the English language.
- Stand, sit and walk for long periods of time. Reach with arms, hands, and fingers.
- Squat/kneel, bend/stoop, twist/turn, grasp and reach.
- Lift, carry, push and pull items up to 45 pounds, and occasionally up to 60 pounds.
- Work in a fast-paced industrial environment wearing hearing and vision protection.
- Basic math skills; good analytical and problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on a “hands on” approach.
- Strong communication skills, good attendance, reliable transportation and follows instructions.
- Persistent drive to deliver positive results, attention to detail, works accurately, independently or with a team.
