Job Description Job Title: Laboratory Assistant Department: Laboratory Reports To: Lab Manager FLSA Status: Non-exempt Prepared By: Human Resources Prepared Date: 03/30/2023 Approved By: Laboratory Manager Approved Date: 06/22/2021 Revised Date: 08/09/2023 SUMMARY Under the direction of the Lab Manager, the Lab Assistant is responsible for the prompt processing of inpatients and outpatients for specimen collection. Responsible for the delivery of specimens to the laboratory. Recognize various age-related needs and provides age-appropriate care as indicated. Assume the responsibility for safety and comfort of patients following established standards and practices – all in accordance with Bigfork Valley’s mission and goals. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, to include capillary puncture, venipuncture, and arterial puncture using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles. Interacts directly with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation. Utilizes standard procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification records, appropriate collection information in accordance with established protocol. Processes and labels samples for subsequent analysis and send out testing. Performs various quality control procedures, and competency evaluations to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations. Performs testing on blood and body fluids under the direction of the laboratory manager/supervisor. Performs proficiency testing on waived and moderate laboratory samples as directed. Maintains a positive attitude toward clients and coworkers. All other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must maintain knowledge of the hospital and laboratory information systems. Ability to work independently in an organized fashion. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE High school graduate or equivalent required. Previous phlebotomy experience preferred. LAUGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY Lab Assistant Page 3 of 4

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS None. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must maintain a positive attitude towards clients and co-workers.
