What You'll Do

The Operations Manager at BikesOnline is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing strategic and operational deliverables across the US business. This position leads various departments, including Customer Service, Warranty, Workshop, Sales, and Warehousing (managed through a third-party vendor). The Operations Manager plays a crucial role in prioritizing resources and expenditures in collaboration with global functions such as Finance, HR, and Marketing. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role significantly impacts company direction, operations, brand reputation, and market presence in the US. The Operations Manager maintains a working relationship with the Australian Operations Manager, identifying global commonalities and opportunities, eliminating duplication and inefficiencies.  


This role is responsible for US based logistics, inventory, and supply chain operations, playing a crucial role in ensuring efficient order fulfillment, managing inventory levels, and coordinating with cross-functional teams to drive business growth and customer satisfaction. 


Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development

  • Mentor and guide department leaders to enhance team performance and drive company growth. Develop and manage Department Heads to ensure high effectiveness and a cohesive operational team.
  • Drive talent acquisition, development, engagement and management within the operations team, encompassing recruitment, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and mentorship. Strategically assess and adjust staffing levels to ensure optimal resource allocation and support for business growth.

Operational Initiatives

  • Spearhead the development and prioritization of operational projects to foster business growth, strengthen brand reputation, optimize efficiency, and maximize customer satisfaction. Collaborate closely with the global Leadership Team to align US operations with overall company objectives.
  • Responsible for the operation of the Carlsbad office and warehouse (or any future location), including kitchen, doors, security, air conditioning, inspections, day to day office operations, purchasing supplies and coordinating team events.
  • Ultimate responsibility for operational compliance with California state regulations and maintaining a safe working environment.

Logistics Management

  • Oversee all logistics functions, ensuring strict compliance with import/export regulations and US customs requirements.
  • Manage and nurture relationships with third-party vendors, including 3PL warehousing, freight suppliers, and distributors. Conduct pricing negotiations to secure the best possible terms and reliable service.
  • Maintain optimal inventory levels, manage stockroom operations, and implement robust inventory control measures to minimize waste and maximize stock efficiency.

Supply Chain Optimization

  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize supply chain processes, including inventory management, delivery times, shipping logistics and cost reduction strategies.
  • Ensure efficient order fulfillment processes and coordinate with suppliers to meet fluctuating demand.

Strategic Planning

  • Create, manage, and drive US Operations objectives and key results (OKRs) and departmental KPIs to monitor performance and ensure alignment with the annual business plan.
  • Devise and utilize performance metrics to analyze KPIs, such as order fulfillment rates, inventory turnover, and shipping times, to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions. Seek these metrics from Department Heads and provide feedback and clarity to optimise performance across functions.

Compliance and Integration

  • Review and monitor regulatory requirements, guaranteeing operational compliance with all relevant US bodies.
  • Ensure optimal integration of key systems (e.g., Shopify, Xero, Brightpearl, Freshdesk) for operational efficiency

Finance and People and Culture Support

  • Provide essential support to the Finance and People and Culture departments, particularly concerning regulatory compliance, inventory management and stock adjustments.
  • Contribute to the formulation of the annual budget and responsible for the achieving against set budgets.

This role requires a physical presence in the BikesOnline Office a minimum of 4 days per week, to assist with inventory receipt and management as well as team leadership.

What You'll Have

  • Business degree or logistics qualifications (preferred)
  • Strong commercial acumen with proven experience in growing an eCommerce business.
  • Experience managing diverse teams, setting KPIs, and communicating effectively.
  • Detailed knowledge of supply chain management, logistics, and overseas ordering.
  • Familiarity with the bicycle industry is advantageous.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment with strong analytical and Office/G-Suite skills.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a strategic mindset.
  • Familiarity with ecommerce platforms and project management software.
  • Ability to work within budget constraints and contribute to budget development.
  • Lead employee engagement planning and initiatives.
  • A passion for the bicycle industry and knowledge of current trends is desirable but not essential.
  • Analytical skills to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to optimize operations.
  • Ability to work closely with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, IT, People and Culture and Finance, to ensure seamless operations and customer experience.
  • Proven negotiation and communication skills with third-party vendors to drive process improvements.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, including sustainability, AI, and digital payments, to ensure the company remains competitive in the evolving eCommerce landscape.
