We're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Backend Architecture team at BILL. In this role, you'll shape how we build and maintain our services, focusing on standardizing their internal structure and improving them over time.

The estimated salary range for this role is noted below for our San Jose based role. Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed above. San Jose pay range
$177,300-$212,700 USD
The estimated base salary range for this role is noted below for our office location in Draper, UT. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in BILL's bonus and equity plan. Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed above. The role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending & health savings account, paid holidays, paid time off, and other company benefits.
Draper UT pay range
$150,700-$180,800 USD

About the Role
We're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Backend Architecture team at BILL. In this role, you'll shape how we build and maintain our services, focusing on standardizing their internal structure and improving them over time.
Day to Day Responsibilities
- Collaboratively define, document, and evangelize best practices for the internal structure of backend services
- Develop and deliver technical training programs to uplevel engineering teams
- Improve our service development tooling (hands on keyboard, personally pushing code)
- Collaborate with teams to drive architectural improvements and patterns
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams
- Contribute to big technical decisions that impact our entire platform
We'd love to chat if you have:
- 8 years of experience in backend development, with significant experience in Java (Micronaut experience a plus)
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and asynchronous microservice architectures (Kafka Flink experience a plus)
- Experience with modern cloud platforms (AWS experience a plus)
- A track record of improving developer productivity through tooling and automation (CI/CD flows, telemetry, alerting, internal tooling, etc.)
- Excellent communication skills with ability to influence technical decisions
- Experience mentoring and teaching other engineers
- Willingness to contribute to services/libraries written in other languages as needed (e.g. Elixir, JavaScript / TypeScript, Python)
