Through thoughtful care and planning the Gardener will establish and maintain the Farmstead Gardens as a place that grows food and minds.
The Woodstock Foundation is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Gardener for the Billings Farm & Museum (BF&M) Farmstead Garden in Woodstock, Vermont.
The Gardener will report to the Public Programs Manager and work closely with the Education & Interpretation Department. Responsibilities will include managing the planning, planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting in the Farmstead Garden. The gardener will maintain a neat, productive garden space for education and exploration around gardening and growing food.
In addition to exceptional gardening skills the ideal candidate has a desire to work in a collaborative environment, is professional and courteous in interactions and communicates in an effective, friendly, and welcoming manner. Candidates should have the ability to take initiative and possess strong problem-solving skills.
Job Duties:
- Ensures the best growing environment in the garden and berry patch by establishing and amending soils, watering, weeding, and other garden maintenance tasks.
- Completes a daily checklist of duties in the garden.
- Plans and executes all planting including successional planting.
- Communicates regularly with the Public Programs Manager to make harvest plans and communicate needs.
- Assists with annual development of a garden planting plan and seed order for the following season with the Public Programs Manager and Education Team.
- Annually puts the garden “to bed” at the end of the season.
- Manages a three-bay compost system.
- Harvests, washes, and delivers produce for the Woodstock Community Food Shelf weekly.
- Engages enthusiastically with guests of all ages and backgrounds by answering questions and demonstrating techniques.
- Flexible hours required – evening hours & some weekends.
Must be able to lift and carry 35 pounds and stand or kneel for extended periods of time.
