What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm Lead position at BILLY GOAT HOP FARM LLC?
Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated Farm Lead to join our agricultural team. The ideal candidate will have at least some experience in field work, mechanics, tractor / implements operation, and possess basic math skills. If you have a passion for farming and working with equipment, we want to hear from you.
We do not expect you to know how to all of these tasks, just willing to learn, work hard, and communicate.
Responsibilities:
- Field work : Tying rope to the trellis and clipping them into the ground, wrapping the plants around the ropes, hand weeding, looking for pest and disease, rehanging fallen plants, picking up rocks, straightening poles, burning the field, cleaning out drip irrigation tubes.
- Tractor work: Mowing, discing, hilling up the crop rows, ground spraying, blaster spraying, front-end loader work, and operating forks on the tractor. Utilize tractors and implements with caution and care for yourself, others, and the equipment.
- Equipment / Mechanical work: Learn how the harvest process works, including how to operate and maintain all of the equipment. Notice if any vehicles, tractors, harvesting equipment, pelletizing equipment, or trailers are having issues. Always have an eye out for a problem. Communicate any potential or actual issues. Work to address and fix any problems.
- Communication: Talk directly with farm owners/operators on tasks, goals, and work schedule. Clearly and kindly communicate with co-workers on tasks at hand and future tasks.
- Be a team leader: We don't expect you to know how to do the steps of hop farming when you start, but we do expect you to learn them and eventually be able to safely manage other employees with a positive attitude. With time, we hope that you will be able to run a crew for different tasks.
- Learn the farm: Once you begin the job, actively start learning as much as you can - where tools belong, the location of different varieties in the field, different irrigation zones, how different equipment and processes work, etc.
- Be tidy: When you are done with a project, clean up all tools and the work area, keep your personal belongs and trash organized in appropriate places, keep the communal kitchen clean, and in general be tidy.
Experience: These are not requirements but the ideal candidate will have experience in multiple.

This position offers a wide range of different work to keep the job stimulating and engaging. There is opportunity to learn many new skills and earn pay increases. It allows for a flexible work schedule some months, and a lot of hours in other months. We plan to have work start by April 1st, and potentially sooner.
We can also offer a 16 foot camper to live on the farm, including a kitchen in the warehouse, and a bathroom facility.
