Job Summary:
The PLC/Controls Specialist is responsible for configuring, programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining PLC systems and other control systems. This role involves working with electrical and control system components to automate industrial processes and improve system efficiency. The specialist will ensure that systems are running smoothly, identify issues, and provide technical support.
Key Responsibilities:
- PLC Programming & Configuration:
- Develop and implement PLC programs based on project specifications.
- Configure and calibrate PLC hardware and software.
- Design control systems, including interfacing PLCs with HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), sensors, and other control devices.
- System Troubleshooting & Maintenance:
- Diagnose and troubleshoot PLC, control, and automation systems to identify malfunctions and resolve them in a timely manner.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on automation equipment.
- Maintain and upgrade existing control systems.
- Project Support & Collaboration:
- Work closely with engineering/maintenance and production teams to ensure that automation solutions meet project requirements.
- Assist in the commissioning of new equipment and systems.
- Provide training and guidance to team members and operators on control system operation.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Create and maintain detailed documentation for PLC programs, control system designs, and maintenance procedures.
- Ensure that all work complies with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies.
- Provide regular status reports on ongoing projects, maintenance activities, and system performance.
- Testing and Validation:
- Conduct system tests and simulations to verify functionality and performance before full deployment.
- Ensure that the control systems are optimized for reliability, speed, and efficiency.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Education:
- High School Diploma Required
- Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in a related field (Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, etc) preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Experience:
- 5 years of experience in PLC programming, control systems, and automation, with hands-on experience in troubleshooting and system maintenance.
- Proficiency in PLC programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagram.
- Experience with PLCs from brands like Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, or Mitsubishi.
- Technical Skills:
- Solid understanding of industrial automation, sensors, actuators, and control systems.
- Familiarity with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, HMI design, and industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and control system diagrams.
- Knowledge of safety standards and codes (e.g., NFPA, IEC, ISO).
- Problem-Solving:
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex control systems.
- Capacity to work under pressure and resolve technical issues quickly.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with motion control systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and PLC controls in a manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies.
- Knowledge of advanced automation technologies and robotics.

- This role typically requires a mix of office and on-site work.
- Ability to work in industrial environments, including exposure to electrical hazards, noise, and varying temperatures.

- Day shift hours including weekends, with potential off hour emergency call in.
