Job Description:

Binghamton University's Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Division of Physical Therapy, located at the newly renovated, state-of-the art health sciences campus in Johnson City, New York, is hiring for its Physical Therapy program and invites applicants for a full-time, campus-based, 10- or 12-month open rank Tenured/Tenure-Track faculty appointment.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or DSc in physical therapy, rehabilitation sciences, biomechanics or related field and have an active and ongoing research agenda as demonstrated by a history of peer-reviewed disseminated work such as publications and successful intra- and extramural grant funding. The successful candidate's research primarily focuses on the musculoskeletal and orthopedic domains, but also embraces movement systems perspective with plans to complement existing research in the division. They will also have experience working with musculoskeletal and orthopedic patient populations, along with excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will also possess or be eligible for physical therapy licensure in New York State, and have teaching experience in a physical therapy education program.

The successful candidate will teach primarily in the musculoskeletal track of courses within the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Other teaching assignments will depend on the candidate's content expertise and the needs of the program. The candidate will also be expected to provide service at all levels of the University and within the profession. Candidates must be committed to student-centered education as well as working as an integral member of the faculty and staff in the Division, College, and University.

The existing Motion Analysis Research Lab (MARL) will provide space and technology for the investigation of research questions that may include, but are not limited to; human gait, balance, biomechanics of upper and lower body, reaching, wrist/hand function, and the effect of the application of interventions and assistive devices on clinical practice. Research equipment available include a 12-camera motion capture system, force plates, in-sole pressure sensors, computerized dynamic posturography with immersive virtual reality environments, dynamometer for isolated muscle testing and rehabilitation, portable instrumented walkway, 16-sensor electromyography, and head-mounted eye tracking systems. The MARL is a facility that creates opportunities for immersive and dynamic learning experiences for faculty, clinicians and students, both within the physical therapy program as well as for students in other health science and engineering programs. The MARL allows students and faculty to work side-by-side on major research initiatives and clinical trials aimed at finding solutions to movement challenges and positively impact people's lives.

The Division of Physical Therapy is also undergoing expansion of space and resources, with the relocation of the MARL to a more accessible location within Binghamton University's Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City, NY. Plans are also in place for the establishment of a physical therapy clinic at the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Johnson City, NY. The planned physical therapy clinic will provide physical therapy services to the greater Binghamton, NY population and provide access to patient participants for educational and research purposes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in ongoing curriculum development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Teaching assigned courses.
  • Advising and mentoring students.
  • Research and scholarly activity and productivity commensurate with progression towards tenure.
  • Providing community service.
  • Participating in program and university committees as appropriate.

Faculty rank and salary are dependent upon the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • PhD or DSc in physical therapy, movement sciences, biometrics, or a closely related discipline from an accredited university.
  • Research experience in musculoskeletal and orthopedic domains.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications.
  • Experience successfully securing intra- and extramural grant funding.
  • Experience working with musculoskeletal and orthopedic patient populations
  • Research agenda that complements and expands current research in the division of Physical Therapy
  • Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current physical therapy license, or eligible for licensure, in New York State, by appointment date.
  • Teaching experience in an accredited physical therapy program.
  • Advanced clinical specialty certification in Orthopaedics (ABPTS - OCS) and/or Sports (SCS) physical therapy
